Batman Returns (1992) / This really upsets me
Fri, 4 Dec 2015, 17:02
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=478eUJ2kBts

I know a lot of people here hate the Nolan films and love Batman Returns, but it really angers me that this contrast exists.  If Bale's Batman could save bleedin' Rachel Dawes, who ends up dying anyway, why couldn't Keaton's Batman save the Ice Princess?!?  >:( >:( >:(

I am happy to read intelligent arguments as to why he could save Dawes but not the Princess.

By the way, this clip isn't anything to do with me.  I just discovered it, so please don't blame me for its existence.

I suppose everyone has seen the news.

Paul Reubens will be once again playing the Penguin's father, this time on "Gotham".

This is excellent news and demonstrates that the showrunners are paying some reverence to the Burton movies.

Who else from the earlier Batman movies should be brought back to play a part in "Gotham"?  Any suggestions?

There is plenty of speculation across the net that Max Shreck was originally written to be Harvey Dent.  The following article assesses the evidence:

http://legendsrevealed.com/entertainment/2015/09/25/was-the-villain-max-schreck-in-batman-returns-originally-going-to-be-harvey-dent/

I completely support this article's conclusion.

http://www.tor.com/2015/07/03/top-11-feral-children-in-fiction/

QuoteIn Tim Burton's origin story of the Penguin, we are told the tale of an infant so ugly that his parents could not bear to look at him, eventually throwing his pram into a freezing river. (I would like to point out that this was a traumatizing thing to watch as a child... but so worth it.) Naturally, that boy was found and raised by penguins. While it might not be quite fair to call the Penguin "feral"—he's fond of top hats and tuxedos, after all—his background provides a cutting remark on so-called evolved people preferring to hide or destroy the things that don't conform to their homogenous expectations of beauty. Offering that background ultimately made the Penguin a much more sympathetic figure, and between him and Catwoman, it was sort of hard to root for the Bat this time around.

It will be the 20th anniversary since the release of Batman Forever this forthcoming June 16.  Will we be doing anything to celebrate it at this site?

How about a group commentary?

I suspect a few regulars may sympathise with the sentiments expressed by the writer of the above article.

I wonder if 'Suicide Squad' should now have its own separate board.  Even though Batman might not feature in it surely it counts as a 'Batman' film of sorts, as much as "Gotham" counts as a Batman TV show.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the first live-action interpretation of Croc.  :)

Can anyone who's seen 'Batman Returns' explain how the Ice Princess didn't recognise who Oswald/The Penguin was when he entered her dressing room even though seemingly everyone else in the entire city was aware of Gotham's latest celebrity and the fact he was standing for mayor?  She thought he was a talent scout!?!  :-\

Even when Batman saved her she thought he was simply an 'ugly bird-man with fish breath', which suggests she still didn't know who he actually was.  :-\

Awesome!

I love what "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" did in terms of bringing back some of the 1960s villains for cameos.  I hope the upcoming animated film will see a return for many of them (even if many of the actors who played them are now sadly deceased).

General Bat-chat / Batkid Begins
Mon, 26 Jan 2015, 18:59
Looks like we'll be getting another Batman-orientated movie soon:

http://www.superherohype.com/news/327725-julia-roberts-to-produce-and-star-in-batkid-begins

There have been the usual snarky voices against this project of the "why is this (cancer-ridden) kid special?" misanthropy on some of the other forums.  But I say, good luck to this project and all the best for Miles Scott.  May he health continue to improve.  And like I said to someone on another board, just because we can't make everyone's wish come true doesn't mean we shouldn't endeavour to make at least someone's wish come true.

Episode 199: Batman Returns

Special Guests: Daniel Waters, Sam Hamm, Mark Reinhart
Guest Co-Host: Mark Gledhill

In this special year-end episode, we're looking at Batman, focusing especially on Tim Burton's Batman Returns. We're joined by Mark Gledhill of Comic Book Consideration to discuss The Bat (Michael Keaton), The Cat (Michelle Pfeiffer), and The Penguin (Danny DeVito).

Our special guests include screenwriters Sam Hamm (Batman, The Watchmen Never Cry Wolf, Monkeybone) and Daniel Waters (Batman Returns, Heathers, Vampire Academy) along with writer Mark Reinhart (The Batman Filmography).
Wow!  What a great end of year treat!

This is an essential podcast for anyone who is interested in the genesis of Batman 1989 and Batman Returns.

I'm only at the Sam Hamm part at the moment (Daniel Waters' interview comes later).

I look forward to discussing this with you guys.  :)

Here's two recent podcasts where fans discuss the film:

http://bsxcluded.com/podcast/cfcpod/cfc036/

http://www.assembleafterdark.com/2014/12/26/assemble-ad-045-one-batman-returns/

Josh Williamson, one of the commentators on the second linked podcast is apparently a comic-book writer, and judging by this podcast he is clearly a huge fan of Batman Returns, even stating that he would like to do a comic-book series one day that featured the Burtonverse characters.

However, I am concerned at one comment Joshua makes, particularly considering what a huge fan he is.  He states that the Shrecks were one of the only rich families left after the murder of the Waynes.  But Max constantly makes references to hailing from a poor background (i.e. "I'm just a poor schmoe that got lucky", and insults like "Nice costume.  Let me guess.  Trust fund goodie-goodie?" and "Mister-to-the-manor-born-with-a-silver-spoon" aimed at blue-blooded Bruce Wayne) and Christopher Walken even stated in a couple of interviews, including the Making-Of Book, that Max was a self-made man with little formal education.

Moreover, aren't the guests at the Max-querade ball wealthy families (the Penguin's entire plan is to kidnap and kill the first-born sons of Gotham's wealthiest families)?  And the mayor, and his family, the Ice Princess, and the campaign volunteers always struck me as very well-to-do.

Any thoughts?

http://metro.co.uk/2014/12/22/16-tim-burton-movies-ranked-in-order-of-greatness-4996397/

According to the article:

Quote#1. Batman

Arguably the best Batman movie ever made, Tim Burton's Batman might not be the most faithful adaptation of the Dark Knight's adventures, but it's a brilliant comic book movie that balances dark and fun perfectly.

Michael Keaton is a great Batman, Jack Nicholson is sublime as The Joker and the movie has a superb soundtrack by the odd-but-brilliant Prince.

When first released in 1989, it was thought to be too dark, but through 2014 eyes Batman is like a big screen version of the Adam West TV show – which is all part of its charm.

Quote#7. Batman Returns

Burton's sequel to 1989's fantastic Batman is a mixed affair. On one hand, it delves into the real character of Bruce Wayne and deals with difficult topics such as abandonment. On the other hand, it's far too 'Burton' for its own good.

In essence, 1989's Batman is Tim Burton directing a studio movie about Batman, while Batman Returns is Tim Burton directing a Tim Burton movie that happens to have Batman in it.

I love that a London newspaper with a high circulation has recognised Tim Burton's first Batman film as "arguably the best Batman movie ever made".

It's really well done.  :)

I'm just a little disappointed that it excluded my favourite scene.  :(
