Movies / Re: The Conjuring Universe

If this truly is the end of the line, then it looks like the creative team is once again going to prove that The Conjuring is a better franchise than Insidious.

Part of me laments the fact that the series is ending. As I understand the Warrens' career, they had dozens of movie-worthy cases. While it makes sense that not everything can or should be adapted, there's still a lot of gas in the tank with The Conjuring's premise and formula. The age of the actors shouldn't be much of a factor in terms of continuing the series.

Maybe the crew is just trying to quit while they're still ahead?

Whatever the case may be, I do believe that The Conjuring Universe is sadly underrated among horror fans.I'll be checking this out in September.

In a year or so, we'll probably hear that TB2 has been shelved. The only Batman running around will probably be Gunn's. I have no idea if that's good or bad. But that's my guess.

Something is going on. Did Gunn torpedo the Reevesverse? Can Reeves not be bothered to finish the script? Is there some other factor going on?

I truly don't know. But the first film made more than enough money to justify a sequel. So, the fact that a sequel hasn't materialized is no accident. Someone doesn't want it to happen.

And if it hasn't happened yet, then I don't know if it's even advisable for it to happen in the future at this point.

That would be my opinion no matter what. But the Sonic franchise, the Mario movie and the Minecraft movie are all making it pretty clear what the next big cinema trend is going to be. It's fair to ask if future comic book films might require reduced budgets (if they get made at all) to accommodate the emerging media environment we seem to be heading into.

Bottom line, I have no faith in TB2 anymore and it doesn't take a genius to see that video game adaptations are the next big thing.

Which raises questions about Superman 2025's prospects, frankly.

But Batman might still once again demonstrate his adaptability. A series of films which adapt the Arkham video game series could be a way to keep the character viable on film.

I'm content to use this thread as a dumping ground for everything X-Men-related, movie stuff or not.

On that basis, Chris Claremont's X-Men is streaming for free on YouTube right now. It's a pretty good documentary that chronicles just how much Claremont contributed to the X-Men mythos. Yeah, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby might've created the concept and several of the characters. But there's no way the X-Men would be what we know today if not for Claremont.

Anyway, check it out.

The puppet thing made me think of the earliest iteration of the CG Clone Wars animated show as some character designs looked kind of like puppets. Dooku comes to mind. I'm wondering if that's what it means.

Putting this here because no other thread seems appropriate.

My old vape box randomly died about a week ago. I wasn't happy about that, of course. But it is what it is. Complaining won't change anything.

So, I bought a new vape box. The cashier selected it for me. All I did was describe the specs I was looking for and then the vape store employee pulled this off the shelf:

Is it me? Or does this vape box have a little bit of a Daredevil aesthetic going?

Quote from: Silver Nemesis on Mon, 21 Apr  2025, 20:46I also heard it was going to be set in the present day, not Neo-Gotham. It probably would have been Batman Beyond in name only
Given Keaton's age, that's probably inevitable. If we take his original films semi literally, then B89 really did happen in 1989. So, it would be hard to shift the narrative into the future while keeping Keaton whatever age he is today.

As to your other point, it is a shame that his tenure as Batman came to such an undignified end. But his return to the character was apparently meant to coincidence with a younger, more diverse and exclusively female DC Trinity taking the lead. Basically, it was going to be the Super Girl Bosses, with Keaton being the male, pale and stale relic from the bad old days who needs to Do Betterâ„¢ or something.

That's not a direction I ever would want to see Batman go, let alone Keaton's incarnation of the character.

Did Killgrave survive Jessica Jones's first season? Off-hand, I can't remember. But he was definitely in that season for sure.

My issue with 2003 Hulk is how it gives a bit too much away in the opening part of the film. From there, the viewer is pretty consistently 10 or 15 minutes ahead of the story.

It's not that it's a bad movie. But when the audience can arrive at the final destination before the narrative itself, you can only call that a weakness.

Enjoyable film but that's a bit of a problem with it.

Quote from: Silver Nemesis on Sat, 19 Apr  2025, 11:44It's the same situation with the Batcave. So many movies, yet we've never seen the giant penny or dinosaur. The closest any live action depiction has come to the wackiness of the comic book Batcave would be the Adam West show, and I'm sure Dozier would have included the dinosaur and penny in that series if he'd been able to. But every other live action version of the cave has opted for a more grounded take, where it's basically just the Batcomputer, the armoury and the Batmobile workshop. Hopefully the next cinematic Batcave will break that trend.
Agreed.

Seems to me that if anybody was ever going to do up a proper comic book Batcave, it would've been Joel Schumacher. If you pay close attention, the Batcave scenes in B&R take place on a lower level, implying that the upper level was still being repaired after the destruction caused by the Riddler in BF. As a teenager, I hoped that if Schumacher ever made a sequel to B&R, that he'd include the dinosaur, the giant penny and all that stuff. Maybe Robin's BF costume on display in a glass case.

Snyder made a step in the right direction by putting a Robin costume in a glass case in BVS tho. So, at least there's that.

Quote from: Silver Nemesis on Sat, 19 Apr  2025, 11:44With the Fortress, I'd love to see some of the more traditional comic book elements make an appearance. The statues of Lara and Jor-El, the Phantom Zone projector, bottled Kandor, the zoo of endangered aliens.
There's also the raised Titanic, statues of Superman's various allies, the vault of truly dangerous weapons/technology, various incomplete maps of sections of the Phantom Zone, a portal/viewer into the Phantom Zone, samples of various types of Kryptonite for Superman's research into a cure/antidote/vax, a memorial to Krypton as part of the Jor-El/Lara statue thing, a science lab and probably other stuff I'm forgetting.

As perhaps a case of Bat-envy, some artists have drawn a giant dinosaur statue and a giant penny in the FOS as well. But those items are infrequent. I never wanted them to be mainstays anyway because, let's face it, those are Batman's souvenirs. Superman should have his own swag.
