Comic Film & TV / Re: Doctor Who

I'm on the Moffat side of the divide.  While I appreciate everything RTD brought to the Doctor, it was veering into Torchwood territory in terms of tone, and as that show has been a consistent letdown for me, I'm pleased SM is handling it.  That said, Series 5 was a bit rocky for me.  Series 6 is probably my favorite so far, though I'm really enjoying S7 as well.  I'm neutral on the MS and DT debate--they're both terrific in their own right, each one more or less is *his own* Doctor, though it took MS a few episodes for me to warm to him.  I have a very positive outlook about the upcoming crossover.  :)  Plenty to celebrate!!!

Where does one get to see the Red Book Edition?  I've seen various fan edtis, but it occurs to me I haven't seen this one--the holy grail of BF.  At least, I don't recall seeing it.

General Bat-chat / Netflix

Not sure how many of you stream Netflix--we have a Roku box, not telelvision, so all of our viewing comes from Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix.  Netflix has just added Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold---just in time for spring break to be over..   Ah, well.  There will be some fun mini marathons coming up.  :)

That's a smashing video!  Terrific year to be a Bond fan.  :)

This is terrific!

Saw the series in syndication in the late 70s/early 80s when I was pretty damn young.  :)

By 1989 I had read Miller, Crisis, B:YO, Batman: The Killing Joke, and the current run through the 80s.  Like others have said, Batman never meant only one thing.  :)  One of the things I love about the world of story is how it can be viewed through many lenses.

This is one of the many reasons I come here.  I love these articles.  Truly outstanding work.  :)

JM DeMatteis recently guest lectured one of my classes.  We talked about the Nolan Batman films (pre TDKR).  I said that I recognized their popularity, and actually quite liked TDK quite a bit as a dialogue about what it means to be a costumed vigilante.  He responded, 'yeah, but what's wrong with having fun while you're at it?'

As for the exposition: this is what hurt BB for me.  You've got great actors in the film.  They can convey moments with a look--let your audience read the text, don't read it to them.  "Taste of your own medicine, doctor?'  Yeah, we really don't need that in there.  Or about 40 other lines that do very little.  I still like Batman Begins (it's a good action film, with some memorable moments and terrific actors to boot)...but, to quote MST3K "well, I guess the plot isn't going to unravel itself.....'

As for TDKR?  Honestly, there is very little the film did right outside of Anne Hathaway's turn as catSelina Kyle.

Updated:

Batman Returns
The Dark Knight (tie)
Batman 1989 (tie)
Batman: The Movie (1966)
Under the Red Hood
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Batman: Sub Zero
Doom (though it's more of a JLA film)
The Batman Vs. Dracula
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (both parts)
Batman Forever
Batman Begins
Batman Year One (love the comic, the movie version--I don't know, it's a little dry for me, the animation doesn't quite work--looks very computer generated--similar to the problem I have with TDKReturns)
Batman: Gotham Knight (some parts better than others, but I left wanting over all)
Batman and Robin (1997)
Batman (1943)  (I prefer the version without the blatant racism--which makes it a short viewing)
Batman and Robin (1949--in many ways, superior to the first one, but the story is very slow)
Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (incredibly watered down, especially considering what animated films it followed)
The Dark Knight Rises...I've come to terms with how much I detest this film.

...I feel like I may be missing something, but this is incorporating the full list of live action and animation provided by DocLB

Coming in late. Echoing both The Autobiography of Bruce Wayne love, and I too would purchase a trade about The Death of Batman.

As for Keaton?  Were TPTB @ WB to go in the BB direction, I would be entirely down for it.  Doubtful, of course, and at this juncture I'd prefer a new series stemming from the possible JLA project.
