Title: telltale Batman game
Post by: riddler on Wed, 9 Mar 2016, 15:24
https://www.telltalegames.com/batman/

I'm surprised this isn't a thread yet.

So far the details are vague other than releasing this year in their traditional 5 episode format. The only other telltale game I've played is Back to the Future which I enjoyed immensely. That one was a point and click adventure puzzle game but I'm told they have developed quite a bit since then.

Interestingly, Telltale Games also struck a deal with Marvel last year to produce a game scheduled for release in 2017: https://www.telltalegames.com/blog/discussion/94655/marvel-and-telltale-games-teaming-up-for-2017

A lot of fans think it could an MCU tie-in, since Telltale generally specialises in licensed properties (BttF, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, etc). So perhaps this Batman game is related to the DCEU.

http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/03/telltale-reveals-batman-video-game-details.html

Telltale were in attendance at SXSW yesterday, during which the developer revealed the first details about its hotly-anticipated episodic Batman video game series. From their official site, here's the points...

Batman is the perfect character for the studio to explore in a Telltale series, giving the team the opportunity to dive deeper into the mind of the man behind the mask. Each night, Bruce Wayne chooses to change Gotham for the better. The team wants to explore what the consequences are of the player's actions when decisions made as Bruce have a critical impact on his nightly crusade as Batman, and vice versa. Certain key situations will give the player the decision to approach a scene as Bruce or Batman, with consequences for both sides.
Fresh interpretation of the universe set in current times, not tied to any existing iteration of Batman in games, film, or comics. Story will focus on Bruce and Batman, not an examination of the extended 'Bat-family,' (Robin, Nightwing, etc.) Fans can expect certain series staples such as Alfred Pennyworth, Vicki Vale, James Gordon, and Renee Montoya. Telltale is looking to keep the villains more tightly under wraps until closer to the premiere.
Certain characters will have a deeply personal relationship with Bruce in his private life, and decisions made as Bruce or Batman will affect their paths towards corruption or redemption.
The player's actions will help shape the Gotham that Bruce deals with during the day, as well as the criminals that Batman faces at night.
Team is committing to a non-photorealistic interpretation of the universe, enhancing engine and technology to deliver a more seamless living comic book art direction. Taking inspiration from the works of over 75 years of artists such as Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams.
Like some other Telltale series, the game will be landing at M (Mature 17+) rating, and the cinematic approach will feel more akin to an R-rated film.

So far, this is the "core" supporting cast consists of Gordon, Harvey Dent, Carmine Falcone, Vicki Vale and Alfred. Given Gordon is listed as a police lieutenant in the source below, maybe this takes place during the early days of Batman's crusade. I kind of hope not, we've already had that sort of game with Arkham Origins...and Arkham Origins: Blackgate.  :-[

But I doubt they won't add more characters into the game.

The Telltale version of the Batsuit looks very similar to the Arkham Origins one and Batfleck.

Not yet, as TLF said.

I am anticipating the Bruce Wayne side of things here. That's an untapped area in general with the character in video games. Or with any comic book character to be honest. Their duality.

Actually, they don't. I'm loving this game.

In some respects, it makes you feel like Bruce Wayne/Batman more than the Rocksteady games. Sure, you're not utilising the perfect freeflow system to kick serious ass and gliding around a massive city. But you're regularly making decisions that put you firmly in the role of Bruce Wayne. There's genuine tension in the plot. Mainly from deciding how conversations should be dealt with - if you're the alpha male in all situations, if you say nothing or back down. It's all basically a big choose your own adventure game, and it may surprise some, but it's far from boring. I'm hooked.

I'm also really digging the graphics. They're not polished next generation quality, and they're not trying to be. After getting that with the Arkham series, they go for something different. The tone is serious but the aesthetic is like an animated movie. In that sense, the game is also a refreshing change. It's a glossy comic book. And they don't shy away from hard violence, either from the criminals or Batman himself.

All in all, with more episodes still to come, people should definitely check this out. The story has gone into bold new territory and again, the tension is probably the game's biggest strength. This series feels like a good example of what a new Batman TV show could be like. Bruce feels more than ever like a three dimensional character with the weight of the world on his shoulders. The game is all about how Bruce navigates the world around him and juggles his duality.

I just got this a few days ago, and I just got done with Episode 2. As far as storytelling goes, this is one of the best tales out there. Really good, so far.

I don't wanna spoil anything, but let me just say, you shouldn't shy away from this game. It plays out more like an interactive movie than an actual game, but damn, is it some good storytelling. Go out and buy this game!

Without delving into any spoilers or anything like that, I must say Ep3 was a little bit underwhelming compared to the previous one, but at least some of the Joker scenes (and Ingruber's performance) were entertaining enough.

I've been playing this and didn't get around to sharing my thoughts.

It's really good.

I appreciate how the game does bold things with characters given its seperate continuity status. This game, probably more so than season one, is about trust. Waller and Gordon are opposed to each other, and Bruce (while undercover) has to deal with the criminal element which draws more suspicion upon him as well. I like what they're doing with John Doe.

Harley is the dominant personality in their relationship. John will break free soon though, and find out who he's really meant to be (which is a key plot point for his arc). I'm looking forward to seeing if John turns on Bruce and throws his prior friendship and goodwill out the window.

Episode three also cemented my love for Bruce/Selina. I chose to play up the romance between them. Inviting her to the bat cave, tipping her off that Gordon was about to arrest her, taking the fall for being a rat at the end, etc. I'm interested to see where this goes.

All in all, it's an enjoyable game to play.

The game was on sale for Xbox, so I picked it up, but haven't played it yet. I think I'm gonna wait till all the episodes are out. Loved the first season, so I hope S2 holds up.

Looks good. My Batman enthusiasm waned for a period of time. But it's coming back. The comics are the source of everything and I'm getting into them again. This series is truly fantastic and it's releasing at the perfect time for me. I'm still the guy drawing Batman logos into snow.

If you enjoyed season one you will enjoy season two, no doubt about it. It's the same quality, with some nice twists and turns. There's lots of tension and difficult choices to make, which makes it really engaging.

Just finished playing Episode 4. I am really digging Anthony Ingruber's portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime. Overall, had a blast going through this one and making interesting choices.

I've played the final episode for season two.

This is heavy duty Batman. I'm not in the business of spoiling this game because a lot of the power rests in discovering it all yourself. But I will say the finale doesn't pull any punches in terms of adult themes, violence and emotion. If you're a traditional Batman fan who grew up with these characters you're surely going to be hit hard with the narrative decisions some of them make. And the decisions you yourself make.

I take my hat off (I don't wear a hat, but you get what I mean) to the creators behind these two seasons. The voice actors inhabited their roles perfectly, and the animation style really grew on me. I sincerely hope there's a third season. But if not, they've created something worth celebrating. Make sure you play these games.

I just got done with the last episode, and it was my favorite in S2. That ending came out of nowhere, and I didn't expect them to go in that direction. But I gotta say, I didn't enjoy it as much as I did S1, and I think it was because you played as Bruce Wayne the majority of the time. You rarely played as Batman until the last episode. But overall, S2 was still good, and I like what the writers are doing with these characters. They're taking them in a fresh, yet, completely different direction than anything we've ever seen in any medium(outside of Elseworlds, of course). Overall, it's a great game.

After a run of mediocre animated films, Telltale is keeping the quality of the brand alive.

I like how both seasons develop Selina and John regardless of what decisions you make for them. And that goes for Gordon and Alfred as well. The series understands these particular characters are mainstays and deserve the attention.

Other things I like about the series:

Batman's suit. Simple and classy.
Batman's modulated voice. Disguised and not ridiculous.
The Batmobile converting back and forth into a sports car.
The music - memorable and effective.
The moody visuals and general adult tone.

The best incarnations of Batman put their own stamp on the universe while retaining the common core elements, and Telltale clearly understand this. They're not just honoring the brand, but they're giving something back. Playing it safe usually ends up with a stale product.

The emphasis on Bruce is what really sold me on this, though. The double life aspect could be emphasized more in the films, in my opinion. The Telltale games gave this component a greater sense of tension and burden/duty.

Season Three (if made) could go down a couple interesting directions. John breaking out of Arkham again, with his mood depending on what decisions you made with him. The big one, though, would be the fallout of either letting Alfred leave, or giving up being Batman. Big plot deviations there in terms of choices.

I'd like to see their interpretations of other villains, too, even though they're covered most of the main ones.

Telltale just laid off the majority of the staff, and said they canceled all their games, except for the last season of TWD, which I think will be their last. I guess they went under? No more Batman Telltale games.  :(

Telltale is back, and the licenses for Batman and The Wolf Among Us were bought up by the new owners, and they're now going to be making new games for those franchises.

Telltale Batman is back!  8)

QuoteAs reported by Polygon, this new Telltale Games is being run by Jamie Ottilie and Brian Waddle. Ottilie was the founder and CEO of Galaxy Pest Control, which worked with such licensed properties as Duck Dynasty and Power Rangers, while Waddle had previously ran sales and marketing for the Havok game engine.

Ottilie confirmed that "some workers from the original Telltale Games will be offered freelance roles, with full-time positions possible in the future."

In addition to The Wolf Among Us, which was scheduled to get a sequel, and Batman, the new Telltale also has full rights to original Telltale games like Puzzle Agent. In addition, Ottilie confirmed that "there are some other expired licenses that we’re looking at."

While Ottilie said that "it's possible the new Telltale will pick up some stories where they left off," they are still evaluating how they will handle each property going forward.

There was no mention of the status of other previous Telltalle Games properties like Borderlands, Game of Thrones, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Minecraft. However, The Walking Dead license is now owned by Skybound and Stranger Thing's rights have reverted back to Netflix, so those most likely won't be making a return through Telltale Games.

“This is a viable business that went away due to market conditions and some scale choices [Telltale’s previous management] made,” Ottilie said. “I like games that tell stories and I think our industry should have a company that specializes in narrative-driven games.”

Negotiations for this deal began six months ago, although no purchase price has been announced. It is known that publisher Athlon Games is a partner in the deal and will "handle storefront operations and distribution."

My good friend Travesty, we both know how good this news is. One of the greatest interpretations of Batman, that we thought was dead, is now being resuscitated for a third game? Dream come true. Didn't expect to see this. At all.
