Title: Hot Toys Batman Returns - release date?
Post by: Bobthegoon89 on Tue, 21 Aug 2012, 00:04
Ok. Any idea when these babies are due? Or anyone have an update of them like prototype photos online? Hot Toys make quality stuff but I now know they are notorious for release dates. Oh the nightmare I had trying to get that Keaton figure. We're told these are out late 2012, I like to think they are being released for the anniversary.

So far though we still have zip information. If pics don't turn up soon what are the chances of them arriving by the end of the year? I'd love to get one for Christmas to mark the anniversary.

I'm hoping the Penguin will be presented in his "Things change" scene garb. But is that too much detail to ask for? I mean that costume is hard to copy in figure form.

I know fans are going crazy about a Hathaway Catwoman figure coming up. Personally I'm saving my money for the main event. You just know that Pffeifer one is going to blast her's off the shelf lol

I'm right with you. I've opted over the years to get that custom figure I see on ebay all the time. I probably should have when it was like $80...now it's around $300. I wish they would start pre order for these so I can ensure getting one. That would be like the "holy grail" of my Catwoman collection!

Here's the custom one:

That is amazing work considering it was done by a fan! If this looks this good imagine what the genuine article will be like.

I'm starting to worry a little. We were told Batman Returns was coming out late 2012. It's getting later and I aint seen no preview pictures. I think Hot Toys are no doubt going to push back the date until next year. I really wanna get one this Christmas. It annoyed me they planned to release Keaton and Nicholson's figures so soon after last Christmas. Kinda strapped for cash in New Year's.

I'm scheming at the moment to acquire one as unlike some fans I don't regularly buy Hot Toys. Where they get the money from to buy whole series of figures I don't know. I only became interested when they finally made the greatest Batman figures ever (1989 movie). Presently Nicholson's Joker is at my local comic store. Nobody has bought yet and I'm praying it remains in that glass case until December lol I know I'm the only person in my city to buy the Keaton Batman as they've never recieved another figure in stock after the sale. However if the Returns figures are released by then or previewed I face the dilemma of choosing one of the three villains (Joker, Catwoman or Penguin).

Hot toys for the love of God get those preview pics out already!!!

I feel you. I was quite impressed with the Anne Hathaway Catwoman figure I just saw pictures for. Buuuut, she just doesn't grab me the same way Michelle does. I admit I went out and bought all the Catwoman memorabilia & figures I could find for this movie, but now that I look at em, I realize "why didn't I just save my $?" So I may end up just selling it. Not to mention I still have a crap load of BR merchandise I need to get rid of. Buttons, Mugs, lithographs, figures, flashlights, keychains the list goes on! I would gladly trade it all for the HT Michelle figure!

Anybody think Dark Knight Rises figures got in the way of the Returns original release?

Hot Toys has missed out big time on the movie's 20th Anniversary. I emailed the site asking for a full release date and got no reply for my trouble. Twats! lol

I'm gonna go for the Nicholson Joker figure now with Christmas approaching. Let's hope they haven't cancelled the Batman Returns line however.

Hot toys just previewed their upcoming products for 2013 on Facebook and sadly Batman Returns was nowhere in sight. Unless they are aware of it's demand and are holding their images for a later date to stir up anticipation.

Unfortunately we have yet another sodden Iron Man to look forward to, plus a Hall of Armour set. An ED-209 from Robocop and some Prometheus stuff.

Irritatingly it seems Hot Toys have spent the budget on more Dark Knight Rises items. Batman's costume chamber is getting a release which is quite nice but unfortunately so is The Bat vehicle. In all it's crapply designed glory. Keep your flippers crossed Mayor Cobblepot still gets his massively overdue release.

They did announce it with special posters. Like these http://www.batmancentral.com/hot-toys-have-announced-batman-returns-16-scale-14-scale-figures/

If they have been cancelled I can't imagine it's because Batman and Nicholson's Joker sold poorly. Maybe the level of difficulty?

I was just thinking the same thing Bobthegoon... that maybe they are really re-working the likenesses.  I think Keaton should be a cinch for them.  Perhaps they are having trouble the materials for the costumes?  I would imagine getting Pfeiffer's figure spot on is proving difficult.  They might've also taken cues from fans and decided to do something with the figures that wasn't originally planned (like removing Batman's mask or something).  Penguin alone could come with all sorts of goodies.  I think he had 3 or 4 prominent umbrellas right?

I would absolutely love Hot Toys figures of the central Returns characters, but of course, cost is a factor. I still haven't bought the 89 figure.

Indeed he did. Knife umbrella may be a possible addition but I'm hoping for the black and white spiral one nicknamed "the dazer" or "hypno-umbrella" (according to the bubble gum cards I had as a kid). "What is that one supposed to do hypnotize me?", "No, just give ya a splitting headache!", "Well...it's not working" lol

I have a feeling The Penguin's victorian outfit from the "Things Change" scene might be too tough a deal for the artists. Have you seen the detail on that costume in the film? It's a tall order I think. But that's the suit I really want them to go for because it looks more like The Penguin to me. I hope it won't be the "sewer pyjamma's" costume. I guess they can include that underneath perhaps?

If they do manage to pull off The Penguin it'll be a pretty monumental feat for us fans. There has never been a 100% accurate figure of Devito's character. Except for the animated series Kenner toy which was a slight redesign. I had the Kenner toy from the Batman Returns line and always disliked the fact they copped out and had the comics version in a black and white tuxedo.

Yeah I think that was just a redux of the Super Powers Penguin figure.  What a crock.  LOL... amazing because they had a semi likeness of Keaton from that Dark Knight and Batman Returns run.  I guess DeVito didn't sign away his likeness for some reason.  I am guessing Hot Toys will show off the Batman Returns stuff after the Batmobile is released (or around the same time) to renew interest for that item.

What would we like to get from the Batman Returns line?

Some thoughts from me:

Characters:
Batman (with optional Bruce Wayne head when he rips off the mask in the finale)
The Penguin - In suit and top hat with umbrella.
Catwoman - Minor rips in the suit but not fully ripped ala the finale.

Vehicles:
Batskiboat
Penguin's yellow duck

The Batmobile will be released mid this year. So that's covered. From B89, I'd also like the Batwing to receive the Hot Toys treatment.

Well actually Kenner themselves rejected any plans to release a proper figure of the Devito Penguin. According to imdb.com's Batman Returns trivia section they refused as he was too frightening and grotesque. So I find it strange just a year later they go and release that version for it's toned down animated series counterpart. Hence the reason you'll never have that figure cheap either loose or carded through ebay.

That's a good point about the Batmobile and my hopes have been renewed lol Perhaps at an upcoming Toy Fair as well? They did preview the Nicholson Joker at one of those.

I was thinking maybe they would even include a "Penguin Commando" as an accessory with The Penguin lol I dunno that would be funny and great. Complete with rocket pack and flip down goggles/visor. I always thought those goggles made them look similar to the camera headgear worn by the marines in James Cameron's "Aliens". Maybe a deliberate design.

I won't be getting Batman if their released (I'm happy with the 1989 black/gold suit) but yes I think a removable mask is highly appropriate for this film. Perhaps with Catwoman scratch marks across his face?

Defintely the Batwing is entitled to a release after they went and made the terrible "cousin" The Bat. Oh dear.

I really like the design of the boxes for Batman and The Joker. The all purple box obviously for The Joker and the yellow one for Batman (matching the yellow/gold end title credits of the movie). For Batman Returns I'd like a black and white box colour scheme to match the sequels two main colours. If they decide to do another variation on those Bat Signals included with the box it's obvious for The Penguin they have to use the "Cobblepot for Mayor" campaign logo.

Good call.

I like the grey Penguin outfit, but the suit with top hat offers more visually in terms of a figure.

A full size Batwing would be just amazing. It challenges the Batmobile as my favourite vehicle design. Really good stuff.
Just imagine something like this but bigger.

The fact Joker shot it down and it has less airtime has given it a mythic, tragic feeling. To me at least.

And lest I forget Catwoman's "Bat Signal" accessory feature could be the Max Schreck "Cat logo" of his company.

What's great about the first two Batman's is that you can identify them merely through their colour schemes. With the original you obviously have the purples of The Joker (also the multi-coloured paints in the museum scene and even his costume) but the thing everyone remembers is the gold colour tone (perfect choice for what I still believe and always will is the best Batman film). The gold was featured of course on the memorable posters shown on marquees but then you have the black/gold look of Batman's costume in his belt and insignia. And like I said the gold titles and end credits. Batman Returns being a darker film and set at Christmas was all blacks and whites. From The Penguin and Catwoman's (in posters at least for her) white skin to their black costumes. Hot toys seem to have recalled this in their box art so I hope they'll continue the trend.

My mum bought me the Batwing from Toy Biz when I was a kid and she completely despises the bug-like new flying vehicle The Bat. She thinks it looks like crap lol Can't say I blame her. It's action sequence is nice but I still can't believe there are actually Nolan buffs who claim the Keaton Batwing is a laughable design. I mean...what. Are these people not insane? How can a sharp, dynamic Bat-like aircraft be a terrible thing compared to a silly lady-bird like...thing. With "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" propeller's too! I don't really care they shot The Bat for real or not compared to the models Derek Meddings built to represent the Batwing. That means nothing to me. The Bat is the best proof Nolan's concepts for Batman do not always work as certain fans wish to believe. I'll even go so far as to state the vehicles in Batman Forever were far more exciting designs compared to The Bat.

That's the thing - it's one thing to be able to afford such items, but it's still $1500 or thereabouts. I can really psych myself up at times about buying something, but then think "I think I'd rather have the $1500 in my pocket".

I'll be devastated if they have. Frankly I'm insulted if Hot Toys cops out on a Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman but is happy to release an Anne Hathaway version. What's the world coming to?

I made a choice to grab Jack Nicholson's figure in case that went and I'm kinda glad I did at the moment if Returns never materializes.

It is frustrating. Much as I enjoy the Alien and Predator movies I do get fed up of seeing them constantly being made by various companies. And Terminator stuff also. Enough already. Or at least make some human based characters like the Nostromo crew for example. How many Xenomorph do we really need?

There was a brief update on the Returns Hot Toys figures the other month on their Facebook page. Can't find the link now but trust me a question on the matter was FINALLY answered. The boss of the company announced they were still coming but either next year 2015 or even 2016. Knowing this company's tendency for superb detail, steep prices and garbage release schedules, it'll be the latter year for sure. Rights issues may have prevented their release thus far.

However some previously announced figures have now been cancelled. Plans to release a "Smooth Criminal" version of Michael Jackson have officially been canned due to apparent intervention by his family's estate. So things can still go down faster than the Titantic.

If I had the cash I'd love to commission someone to make a whole 'Batman Returns' set of toys featuring the entire main cast.

I once saw a 'Sugar' from 'Batman Forever' custom Barbie doll online and it looked awesome.

Well it's a great figure but I won't be getting it since I have the version from the first movie which remains firmly my favourite. I shall never understand why so many fans like the Returns suit (apart from the sharper, blazing insignia). Because while I still like it myself I'm not crazy about the grey colour tone. Nor the machined body armour replacing the original human anatomy. I actually think Val Kilmer's outfit he wears for the majority of Batman Forever is far far better because they brought back the black and gold look of the first film quite deliberately. It always looked classier in my opinion.

Some fans are actually going to sell their figure of the first movie just to get the Returns one which I find a little foolish myself. Why not try and get both to represent both films? And if they already have the Joker he'll look a little out of place without his corresponding Batman. The figure from the 1989 film has a much better texture to it far as I can see. I also don't think this Batman will come with as many great accessories as the first. Let's see, he'll have his Penguin commando remote control, the updated grappling gun design and I'm sure the famous homing/"super batarang". But that's it right? What else is there? Unless they toss in the cape glider with the spiked tip wings? Can it be done on a figure like this?

I'm sure Penguin and Catwoman will follow now. However it won't be for a while I think. The head of Hot Toys said they were having some problems with the licence. He estimated they won't be coming for another two years or so. He'll possibly be wrong. Therefore it's much easier to toss out a new Batman since they already did one. Hot Toys biggest issue in my book. Just replicating endless Iron Man variants e.c.t instead of putting out enough wholly new characters.

It always looked classier in my opinion.

i agree totally. batsy's suit in returns (emblem aside) wasn't great. i don't like the armor or any of it. val's was the best of both worlds but it never made it to action figure form did it?

We are equaled baffled by fans that are into the exaggerated sculpted muscles. Compared to the armored batsuits of today, the Returns one still retains a fair amount or organic shapes. It's a good compromise in my eyes, and I like that it brings the seams out into the open, more a actual part of the design instead of trying (and failing) to hide them.

I just miss the original insignia and the metal plates on the gauntlets.

Tastes differ, of course. I like how simple and elegant it is. I can't find any faults, to be honest. Being too perfect could be one for some, I guess?

Some fans are actually going to sell their figure of the first movie just to get the Returns one which I find a little foolish myself. Why not try and get both to represent both films?
Agreed.

I own the Batman '89 Hot Toys figure and I'm gonna buy the Returns one as well - love them both equally.

When is it getting released?
