Title: Best Joker Scene
Post by: The Dark Knight on Sun, 5 Apr 2009, 04:41
To commemorate Heath Ledger's birthday, here's a poll asking a simple but difficult question.

Which is the best Joker scene?

This list is off the top off my head, so inform me if I've left anything out.

Voted for the mob meeting.

Yep, good scene.

I voted for the killing of Gambol. For me it's his best scene. Got to love him making up some random explanation of his scars on the spot with knife in hand. His facial and voice acting is superb. And I love the 'try-outs' line. :D

I think it says a lot about how great Ledger's performance is that Nolan stuck mostly to a close up when the natural inclination would probably have been to alternate between a wide shot encompassing the Joker and Gambol and a close up of just Gambol to remind the audience of his peril.  Not the intuitive choice but Nolan definitely made the right choice.

As for my fave scene, I went with the interrogation.  Yeah, it makes zero sense in context but the dialogue and the performances are spot on.  All Bale really has to do in that scene is explode.  Ledger, on the other hand, has to believably light the fuse and I think he does so masterfully.

Great stuff.

Gotta vote for the hostage video myself.  Ledger gives me CHILLS everytime- not so much what he says, but how he says it- how often his tone changes, how he pats Brian on the cheek...I don't think Ledger could've done that part any better.

That'd probably be my second fave. From fooling around to dead serious in the blink of an eye. I seriously think that full frontal Joker laugh is the best ever. Ledger really earnt his pay with that one.

Close call between the hostage video and interogation scene.

Went with the interogation scene even though i have issues with how Batman got in the room.

Yes, same. And at what point he got in there. Apart from that, surely Joker would have sensed somebody or something that close to him. Or heard something.

This Batman can transform to mist (or better: thin air) in split seconds.

Remember the first Batman scene with Gordon, the triumvate in the rooftop scene or the party scene? He can literally disappear at will, like Keaton's Batman did in Axis chemicals ;D At least Batman Returns didn't have a "Batman disappears" scene, as far as I can remember.

Anyway, favorite Joker scenes are the Meeting the Mob and the Video, but most Joker scenes are powerful anyway.

I love the magic trick scene. Pure Joker. The other moment I really liked though was when he pulled Brian's Batman mask off, the guy is really terrified, but Joker takes a moment to make the Batman mask bounce off screen while hooting like Daffy Duck, Very creepy and funny in a very disturbing way. Another good highlight is when he shuffles out of the hospital while wearing the nurse uniform. But I had to vote for the magic trick.

I love the Gambol scene because we are seeing Joker in his element. He's doing his thing. You can see the insanity in his eyes reach a peak as his story reaches the conclusion.

I like the mob meeting the best because I see it as the best homage from this Joker to certain scenes from BATMAN, & it's just plain hilarious (ta-da)! :D

The pencil trick thing is good, but I'm kinda over it now. It's over-exposed. And the scene doesn't last that long anyway. I don't think Nolan filmed the mob meeting scene too well either. He doesn't have the camera on Joker's face that much. Most of the time we're just hearing his voice.

Love the party crash scene, too. We see him wield that little knife once more, and recount another scar origin. The way he eats, drinks and fights (grabbing henchmen and throwing them into combat, getting a cheap shoe knife kick in there) is gold.

Now that is really an hard choice! :P You CAN'T have just one favorite scene of Mr. J. Every scene that he appears is simple beautiful. But I think I'm going with his final scene. Iconic. ;D

"You want to how I got these scars?"

"No... but I know how you got these!"

Yes, this is a cool scene. Reminds me of A Death in the Family (except nothing explodes, & no one dies).

Joker left hanging at the end is brilliant. He is caught, but has essentially won due to his masterful planning beforehand. Got to love that laugh at the end.

I'd say it's 50/50 between Batman & Joker (Joker raised chaos & corrupted Dent, but failed to corrupt Batman & see the outcome of the ferries. Although his speeches in the interrogation room & construction site might haunt Bruce in the next film.).

I find it funny that Batman thinks taking the blame for the murders doesn't make the Joker win. Yet, he's just even more a freak like Joker in the eyes of the public for doing so.

They'll think neither is better than the other. Batman's reputation is damaged. He can't be cleared of this crime either, telling the truth exposes the truth of Harvey.

The Joker wins either way.

Yeah, if we analysis, The Joker really won. But we know that Batman always win in the final ( ;D) so, at least, for the people of Gotham (and for the public), he shows that he is so strong that can take the blame of a good man who became a villain.
Back to The Joker, other scene i like: the TV hostage. Man, this is really creepy. :-X

"Look at me. LOOK AT ME!" :o

I think my second favorite Joker scene is with Rachael at the party. I just love those two 'wanna know how I got these scars? moments. Tense and well acted. Ledger was brilliant in the role.

Yeah, & I thought it was hilarious when the Joker tries to fight dirty by giving cheap shots to Batman.

Heath's acting in the interrogation scene is incredible IMO. I also really like that we hear Joker's outlook on the world and the people that inhabit it. Top stuff.

My favorite Joker scene... when he's dressed like a nurse. It naturally made me laugh and I was disappointed that he took off the hat and wig so quick.

As a favorite single shot, the moment he jumps off the top of the money pile in a theatrical circus-like manner (just before the burning), and then the way he repeats the word "freak" to the Russian mobster (again in the burning scene), just before he orders his mutilation and feeding to the dogs. Little details, but very comic book-like.

Yep, the money jump is very Joker. For some reason I think it was improvisation on Ledger's behalf.

And you know, I bet landing on your butt the way he did on mounds of cash like that (which isn't as soft a landing as it looks) probably hurt like hell.

I chose the interrogation scene myself.  It's at that point that all is revealed and all bets are off.  CLASSIC Joker and Batman at psychological war with each other.  The interaction between the two is so intense!
