Title: 4 inch Batman 89 and Batman Returns figures from Mattel

Website The Toyark have posted photos from the Mattel stand - who have just revealed their DC Multiverse range (which covers more than just film and TV) which includes figures of Batman from 1989 and Batman Returns' Penguin and Catwoman and some figures (surfing Batman & Joker) from the 60's Adam West TV show.

It's an amazing time to be a collector! As a kid, I always wanted figures of Reeve/Keaton and a '66 comic.

And now we have finally have them!

Now if only they could get around to those flying cars...

These look fantastic and I can't wait to get them, it's too bad Nicholson is a greedy bastard and wouldn't let them license his likeness as well for an affordable price.

Fantastic. I'll be on the lookout for all three.

After 20 years Danny Devito finally gets the action figure he deserved and was cruelly and stupidly denied back in 92! And it looks fantastic in it's detail. But Catwoman's ears need a slight trim before release. Too bat-like and not enough cat-like right now.

Still I'm hugely disappointed Mattel has beaten Hot Toys to manufacturing the Returns characters. How is it that Mattel can capture the look of Devito's Penguin in mere plastic so brilliantly and yet the Hot Toys boys have yet to reveal their efforts on the embarrassingly overdue Returns line? Honestly I would have preferred a super detailed "adult collector" figure of Devito and Pfeiffer with the same quality as their Nicholson Joker. With any luck these revealed figures from Mattel might get Hoy Toys asses moving at unleashing their figures and not blasting wave after boring wave of more Iron Man and Dark Knight series figures? In any case I think I'll watch and wait first before buying.

Having bought Hot Toys Nicholson and Keaton figures I have to say I'm not too impressed with Mattel's (and likewise Neca's) attempts at doing Michael Keaton. I understand not all fans can own the super expensive figures but honestly this figure is the true masterpiece of joy. I too have heard Nicholson didn't give away his likeness or that Mattel couldn't afford him. But in Hot Toys case it was money well spent in my view.

Not sure what you mean by a lack of Michael Keaton. Didn't you ever buy the Kenner movie figures in the nineties? Sure their not exactly "Movie Masters" by today's standards but they were always excellent at capturing Michael Keaton's likeness (which was duplicated even more brilliantly in their Beetlejuice line). They also did a fine job with both Val Kilmer and George Clooney (though they never got his hair quite right, see "Transforming Bruce Wayne"). But Keaton's face always made for great action figures. "Crime Attack Batman" was the closest figure to the movie wardrobe back then but Batman movie figures have always been in plentiful supply.

It was the Superman movies that suffered truly. I'm shocked that for movies that were so huge not a single action figure was produced. That would have driven me nuts if I was a kid back in the early 80's. The merchandise for the Superman movies always seem so sparse and primitive compared to Batman's. A real shame.

But the worst offender? Back to the Future! Still no action figures and look at the amazing cast of characters that can be done in various forms. When will some toy designer finally wake up on that one?

I wonder if the Batmobile is also in their plans. Judging by the '66 Batmobile, it will be almost of scale model quality, and at "only" $60 (roughly the same price with a PS3 game), it will offer a nice alternative to those that couldn't afford the mammoth batmobile by Hot Toys.

Post by: Catwoman on Thu, 24 Oct 2013, 23:31
wouldnt their batmobile be a lot cheaper than the 66 one since the  66 one was done for the taller figures and these are four inches tall? or were those figures four inches tall too and i just dunno what the f*** i'm talking about? lol.

You're right, I didn't pay attention to that. 66 are 6" inches tall and 89/BR are 4. If one is used to decimal, 2 cm isn't a big difference, but 2 inches is a little more than 5 cm.

that's why i am so so excited about this especially the catwoman. it isn't those big ultra detailed ones that i would break if i sneezed on it lol. plus they're cheaper so i will have more chance to COLLECT EM ALL! like the commercials say. got to get her of course and i pretty much have to have batman too. penguin? eh. lol. but i wonder who else they are going to make. i wonder if johnnygobbs will get an ice princess figure! :o :P

i wish the batsy figure was his batman returns suit because it was better looking (idk about the rest of you but i thought the emblem looked so stupid with the extra points) but oh wells. at least they are making them. it's like a dream come true!

i need help (that doesn't require any further comment from the rest of you...). which is closer to 4 inches? the old batman figures like for the burton/schumacher movies and the cartoon or the star wars figures that were a bit shorter? trying to picture her in my hand.
Title: Re: 4 inch Batman 89 and Batman Returns figures from Mattel
Post by: gordonblu on Tue, 29 Oct 2013, 19:25
The Star Wars figures are  3.75 inches in height so these will probably be closer to the old Batman movie figures.

Where did you hear that?
I've heard it through the grapvine many times, obviously for them to use his likeness they have to get approval or in Jack's situation pay him for his likeness. That is the reason that Hot Toys was able to do their Joker figure, but NECA wouldn't pay the amount requested to do a 1/4 scale figure, which is a HUGE shame.

did a little bit of googling and found this.

$10? that's a fine price to pay for a michelle catwoman that is REALLY a michelle catwoman. you boys that have experience or whatev with the multiverse stuff are they sturdy enough that if the cousins come over and play with them they can without breaking her and me going to prison for drowning them all?

It could be any day up to the last day of spring, which is June 20.  :(
Edit: BBTS says Penguin will be out by April, couldn't find any word on Catwoman.

I'm currently waiting on a body for a Vicki Vale custom that I'm making. It's estimated to arrive in the second quarter of this year, that's anywhere from April 1 - June 30. Arrg.  ::)

No, I just got into this.
I really shouldn't say that I'm making these, I'm commissioning them. I suck at anything that doesn't have an undo button.
I recently saw a really awesome 1/6 scale Michael Keaton head on Ebay. I've already sent it out to be painted.  I then found out that a group on the Sideshow Freaks board is going to make a Kim Basinger head, so I got into that.

The definitive Batman look is right here. Black suit, yellow belt and yellow emblem. The realism crowd will shout it down, calling for all black camouflage, but who cares? I'm all about what looks good in comic and film media. And this looks fantastic. I wouldn't saddle myself with something visually inferior just because.

The main thing I love about the Burton Batsuits is they look like a darker-coloured version of the Neal Adams Batman. Anyone who wants the Batsuit to look more "realistic" should ask for a Batman Beyond design, because wearing a cape and a mask that exposes your mouth would make you vulnerable in the real world.

It's about time there a new action figures based on the Burton films. They should make one for Nicholson's Joker, if Jack hasn't got it licensed.

I have to say I think the new Michael Keaton figure (unmasked and otherwise) is appalling. Absolutely appalling. I'm quite surprised fans are actually buying it. The Catwoman figure too looks most dreadful. She looks as though she's put on a bit of weight round the arms and thighs in the last 20 years.

There is no excuse really for this lack of detailed quality. Kenner got it spot on with Michael Keaton's face back in the early nineties in the days before pompous adult collector lines such as Movie Masters. Not just in their excellent Transforming Bruce Wayne figure but also their Beetlejuice line. It just goes to show that sometimes the good ol past can outclass the precious present eh?

But thank goodness they didn't screw up The Penguin. It looks like they threw the budget at him. And he certainly needed it. I'll buy that figure and also General Zod from Superman II. Not a great likeness of Terence Stamp but since there has never ever been movie Superman figures in that scale I'll make an exception. But with Catwoman and Batman the Kenner figures remain far far better.
