For those that saw this back in '89(I wasn't born yet), do any of you remember anyone having a problem with Batman killing back then?

Now I'm not justifying or condemning Burton's decision to have Batman kill in his films, but it's something I've been wondering since with today's Batman fans, many of them don't consider this to be the "true" Batman since he's a murderer, but it didn't seem to be a problem with folks back then, and I'm assuming Batman hasn't killed in decades in the comics by that point(haven't read them, sorry). It does puzzle me how people seemed to dislike the inclusion of Joker being the murderer of the Waynes from day one, but they are fine with him going Charles Bronson Death Wish style on the bad guys he faces.

I generally have a great deal of respect for Rob, but here, he comes across as just a Mad Max 2 fanboy who just wants to go out of his way to trash Fury Road. Rob's always had a thing for favoring things that are old rather than new, but he comes across as just a silly goose who hates anything new in this video. Not to mention, some of the points he made were just ridiculous like how having a bit more gunfire in your movie is immediately boring. Just f*** off, Rob.

If Nolan, his brother, or Goyer could come back to expand on this particular Batman universe through novels, graphic novels, or video games even, should it be done? And if so, which stories should be told? Some possibilities would be the adventures of John Blake's Batman, expanded origins for Ra's al Ghul or Bane, and maybe even more villains added to the roster reinvented in that Nolany way, of course.

On a side note, I am already aware of there being a direct-to-DVD movie called Batman: Gotham Knight that takes place between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. But that doesn't look or feel the least bit like it's part of the same universe at all. Does anyone actually consider that canon?

Is it just me or did Two-Face feel a little out of place in this film? It's not that he didn't fit the plot or the themes of the film, but his visual transformation came off a little silly for me. I really like the idea of the Joker wanting to prove how beneath all of our good deeds, we can all be evil, terrible people like him but I find it a little silly that it had to be symbolized with the character who makes that transformation to literally have half his face burned off, leaving him looking half-man, half-monster.

It just comes off a little cartoony in this ultra realistic universe Nolan created, to have a character looking so spelled out for us with his appearance. If they had Dent look the same yet still act like Two-Face, I think I would have been able to take his character a little more seriously. I'm not sure would fans accept it, though.

I don't know, am I the only one who finds his appearance in the film a little silly?

With the recent onslaught of TV Spots and the film being released next month, any new thoughts on Josh Trank's Fantastic Four? For me, I am still not impressed. While the movie does seem more light-hearted than it appeared at first, it still doesn't appear to have anything new to offer from the 2005 film and just seems like a bland origin story. What I'm worried about, is the film becoming a tonal mess considering the extensive re-shoots that went on supposedly due to the film lacking humor and action. Those rumours of Trank allegedly showing up high as a kite on set, verbally abusing Kate Mara, trashing his rented home, and being replaced for the re-shoots don't exactly get my hopes up either. Not saying I believe all of them, of course(though, it does seem likely there's some truth behind them considering Trank recently "quitting" Star Wars and doing so little promotion work).

What do you think? Have the TV Spots changed your mind? Do you believe those rumours to be true?

With the announcement of Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and being rebooted again, does this mean The Amazing Spider-Man series will be forgotten in the future? Whether you liked them or not, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy was clearly the more influential series to the superhero genre and with the immense success of MCU, wouldn't Webb's films just be forgotten as they were right between the two? This was just something I was thinking about the other day.

My guess is that while they'll always have their fans, they'd be probably the least discussed incarnation of Spider-Man by the general public. Garfield would likely become the Timothy Dalton of the franchise, meaning that he'll have a cult following among fans, but won't necessarily be iconic in the role.

What do you think?

Here is the entire main campaign and most of the Catwoman missions(I think) re-scored with Hans Zimmer's music from the Dark Knight trilogy:

A few months ago, I finally got around to seeing one of the all-time geek essentials, Firefly. And I gotta say, while I didn't really hate or dislike the show, I don't see what the fuss was about either. I thought the show was entertaining for what it was and it certainly had an interesting aesthetic style of mixing sci-fi and western elements but beyond that, I really don't think the show was that great. The plots often felt very recycled and standard and they were a bit predictable at times. The characters, while likable, feel a bit unoriginal and archetypical and two-dimensional(though, that may be due to the early cancellation). The show also depended too much on one-liners on occasion as every time something bad looked like it was about to happen, one of the characters had to say something witty before commercial break, somewhat deflating the tension in the scene. On a side note, am I the only one who thinks Summer Glau just isn't a very good actress? She's okay in the show, but everything else I've seen her in, with the exception of a few scenes in that Terminator show she was in, she's just not very good and seems to rely solely on making that derpy expression of hers in every scene and just doesn't have much else going on. She's pretty hot, though.

I did like Serenity a lot better and I thought it pretty much fixed all the problems I had with Firefly. A more interesting, better realized plot, richer, better developed characters, and I feel this concept just works better with more focus on sci-fi action over constantly relying on character banter. But on its own, I just don't think Firefly is all that great. It's not bad, just overrated, at least in my opinion.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Movies / Interstellar(2014)

Any thoughts on Interstellar? In short, while I think the film has its problems, the first half of the film is quite slow, there's often too much technobabble and exposition in the script, and the film is perhaps is bit too long. However, once Interstellar kicks off, the film becomes fascinating, intriguing, thrilling, and emotionally engrossing.

What did you think of Interstellar?

Personally, I'm most interested in Avengers: Infinity War because as sick I am of books being split into multiple parts(Harry Potter, The Hobbit, The Hunger Games), I'm interested in seeing a story arc like this being adapted in two parts and how it'll turn out.

Is it just me or is some of the dialogue in this film just downright awful? In the scene where Selina confronts Daggett about the clean slate, everyone gives clever comebacks non-stop and it just doesn't sound natural. And to be honest, even the "clever comebacks", aren't that good, some of them I thought just sounded like they're trying too hard to be witty and came off a little cringey.

I don't know, am I the only one who thought some of the dialogue was awful?

If the series never got rebooted and we got Batman: Triumphant, do you think it could have worked? Normally, when a series like this goes off-the-rail, I would assume it was time to take a break and start over but since the Burton/Schumacher series was relatively loose in continuity, with each film being its own separate adventure that doesn't require viewing earlier installments to understand, could Batman: Triumphant simply continue the tone of the Burton films while adding a few elements in from the Schumacher films such as Robin and Batgirl for the sake of continuity or just simply ignore both Forever and Batman & Robin and just continue off Returns or maybe even the first film.

I don't know, do you think it could have worked?

I understand why Bruce broke up with Vicki since he was acting very mysterious and strange towards her a lot of the times and she clearly wasn't happy to find out he was Batman and it was fitting not to see Bruce with Selina again since it made the story all the more tragic but why Chase? She helped him mend his emotional wounds and she didn't seem to mind him leading a double life at the end so why do you think they broke up?

Who would you say was Bruce's true love in the Burton/Schumacher franchise? I'd say Selina. He probably connected with her on a deeper level since they were both secretly tortured people that took their inner demons out under a different persona.

Who do you think was Bruce's true love in these movies?

Movies / Sam Raimi vs. Peter Jackson
Sat, 23 Aug 2014, 06:28
Has anyone else realized the amount of parallels these two filmmakers share?

Here's some examples:

- both started out making low-budget horror films in the 1980s(The Evil Dead, Bad Taste, Braindead)

- both directed a blockbuster trilogy starting in the early 2000s(Spider-Man and The Lord of the Rings)

- both made fantasy prequels around the early 2010s(The Hobbit and Oz the Great and Powerful)

- both made critically-acclaimed dramas in the 1990s(Heavenly Creatures, A Simple Plan)

- both never had professional training prior to directing but made shorts at early ages

Who do you think is the better filmmaker and why?

Which of these two Spider-Men do you think would win in a brawl? For me, I'd say Maguire. He's shown greater feats of strength and durability in his movies with him sending Flash flying across the hall with a single punch and stopping an entire subway train out of web and being able to take a fricking pumpkin bomb in the face whereas Garfield is never shown to be THAT strong or durable(yet).

Who do you think would win in a fight?

If this were a prequel to Tim Burton's Batman instead of a reboot, how many things would have to be changed in order to fit into that film's continuity while still retaining the same basic plot and what things could we add for it to lead into the '89 film?

Would this film have worked better if it was just its own little character piece about a physically deformed man trying to be accepted back into society? From watching this film, I get the sense that Burton was really just trying to make another movie about a social outcast and not much of a Batman movie. He seemed to only have a passing interest in the character, mainly in the duality of his two personas, Bruce Wayne and Batman but even that's not as well explored as I wished.

I feel if this wasn't Batman, Oswald could have been a much more interesting character since he didn't need to be portrayed as a villain from the getgo and maybe have a more GRADUAL shift to madness or heck, why not just make him not a villain at all? But since this IS Batman, we need a villain for him to fight so Burton has to make him rotten from the start so there's a threat for Batman to overcome from the start. I don't know, I just feel this movie would've just worked better if it wasn't Batman. Anyone else think so?

While I love the idea of having a shared universe for all these characters, I DON'T think it'll take too long before it becomes overcrowded with too many characters and storylines going on, making these movies very unfocused and impossible to follow without seeing EVERY film in the franchise first. Granted, I think the audience have responsibilities on their own to follow the franchise as best they can but I think eventually, average fans will just become lost in the continuity after seeing 20 or so movies in the same universe. I think they could prevent this by wrapping everything up at the end of each phase.

But what do you think?

Movies / thoughts on Maleficent(2014)?
Tue, 3 Jun 2014, 07:33
Any thoughts on Maleficent(2014)?

In short, I thought it was cliche, predictable, had extremely simplistic character motivations/development, and an overall disappointing cast. Some minor saving graces include Jolie's performance, some good-looking visuals, a beautiful score, one or two fun action scenes, and a really good cover of "Once Upon a Dream" by Lana Del Ray but that's about it.

But what did you think?
