Title: Batman Prologue/Dance With The Devil (Batman 1989 Fan Film)
Post by: PJ on Fri, 19 Apr 2013, 16:33
Hey guys,

Some of you may remember me, a few years ago I planned a prequel for Batman '89 called 'Prologue'. I got pretty far with the production, but I was funding it myself and when a long term relationship broke down, things kind of unraveled.

I would still very much like to make a Burton continuity fan film, but don't have the same kind of resources that I had back then, what I do have is two scripts - Prologue, which might be a little too ambitious at this stage - and a second script entitled 'Dance with the Devil', which is a little more realistic in terms of production requirements.

My question is this, is it worth me attempting to get this off the ground? What kind of support would I likely get from the community. I would basically need people skilled in CGI, matte painting, model making and the like.

Opinions....

Here is a shoot I did last weekend in the suit, so you can see I can achieve the quality needed.

Forgot to add, Dance With The Devil is a sequel to the events of Batman Returns as well as a hark back to the events of Batman 1989

The first photo is pretty darn right awesome! The last one ain't too bad either ;-)

Would Kickstarter be an option? The 1st photo would sell it for me, plus you have a lot of great work done for Prologue

Thanks mate, on all counts.

I have considered Kickstarter, but I'm wary of the legalities regarding fan films.

The biggest hurdle for me this time is the visual fx. Last time I was doing a lot myself, this time around I no longer have access to the software needed, do I'd need some major help there.

Right now I'm exploring the feasibility of doing it, once I've pooled (and if) the resources I'll make a short preview and go from there.

I like the sound of this very much, mixing in the two together.

Would you plan on using content filmed in the past, meaning the Jack Napier footage of him answering the phone call?

If there's a batgirl suiting up sequence ala the last pic I'll be right on board.  :-[

Ral, I'd need Photoshop, Lightwave, Final Cut, After Effects and a mac to put it all on.

I still have, camera, grip, sound and lighting equipment. I can edit on my PC if needed, but I do hope to replace it with a new mac in the coming months.

Ideally is like to make both films, but I'm leaning toward Dance With The Devil, which although I'd smaller in scale, still would feature Hugo Strange, Scarecrow, Batgirl, Catwoman and.....The joker

What a strange question to ask, not to mention pretty personal. Seeing as she's my girlfriend, I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Back to topic.

Are there any artists out there that would like to help out with storyboarding?

^ I'd love to storyboard something like this! And I can put you in contact with two different composers.

As far as matte paintings go - to avoid software trouble, had you given any thought to finding a talented oil painter and producing traditional mattes, as they did in  '89?

And is the short clip of Napier that you produced for "Prologue" still available?

I've already offered to compose the filmscore.  Right now I'm literally finishing the final notes to the prologue in Jack Napiers Apartment.  Should have it posted soon.

Do you still need storyboards? I could doodle some even though my artwork is quite simplistic.

Simplistic doesn't matter to me, a good grasp of the cinematic is. By all means, the more the merrier. It would be better to break up the work any way I think

Batman Prologue was one of several things, along with the picture gallery and BatmAngelus' Batman 89 comic analysis, that originally drew me to this site back in 2008. I was sorry to hear the project stalled, but I'm thrilled to see things are moving again now. The Dance With the Devil project in particular sounds very intriguing. The production values in those photos and the Napier's apartment scene are clearly anything but amateur. You seldom if ever see that kind of quality in a fan project. So here's hoping it all works out. I'll look forward to seeing the finished films.

Here is the Jack Napier Apartment Scene with my own score composition.  Understand that this is still a working progress and should not be looked upon as the final product.  My inspirations for this scene of course comes from both Danny Elfman and Bernard Herrmann.  Feel free to comment.

Just listened to your effort. I don't think PJ can ask for anything more. You captured the sound of B89, and more importantly, it suits the scene in question.

PMs replied to.

Chaps I definitely want to move ahead with this and will most likely do a Kickstarter campaign. I'll shoot and edit something from the script to aid this, but I need HELP!

At this stage I really want to bring on board a Production Designer/Concept artist and traditional Model Makers.

Please pass this on to anyone you might know who'd be interested.

There is an interesting new reality show on Sky called "Toy Hunter" in which Batman merchandise from numerous era's often pops up. Last night I saw an episode in which the guy who actually designed the figures for the Batman Returns line was selling off his stock. As a designer I think he had been given one of each figure still on there original cards.

It was quite a sight seeing the actual guy who had designed all these figures that gave me hours of fun as a kid. Interestingly he said the Penguin figure, the figure we love to hate because it looked nothing like Danny Devito, was quite rare back in the day to find. I still have mine but his was still on it's original card so is no doubt much more valuable. So you might want to think twice before scoffing at it's lack of film detail!

Sadly he seemed happy to be rid of his Batman work but not his Star Wars stuff which he had grown up with himself. I wish he had a little more pride in the figures he'd designed for the movie. Arctic Batman was always my favorite.

He didn't seem to have Catwoman though and I always thought this was the rarest. I managed to get it myself at the time but I've heard from others who never saw it on shelves. It's details is still pretty marvelous right down to the eyebrow raising leather straps on her backside courtesy of Kenny. Possibly the one and only time they ever flirted with "escort-like clothing" *ahem*

Also there didn't seem to be a Wayne Manor/Batcave playset. I have mine still in it's original Batman Returns box and I believe it's hard to acquire on Ebay.
