Title: Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Thomas Wayne?
Post by: The Laughing Fish on Thu, 13 Nov 2014, 09:34
I'm surprised nobody reported this yet. This was a photo taken on set two months ago of what appears to be a portrait of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, better known as the Comedian from Watchmen. He's assumed to be playing Thomas Wayne.

And that's not all. It looks like we'll be getting yet another take on the Wayne tragedy...but this time it hints the family leaving the theater after watching The Mark of Zorro. Will this be the most faithful interpretation yet?

Thomas Wayne with the stache?  Works for me.

Quite the update! After seeing the portrait, I can dig it. And Thomas Wayne usually has a stache in the comics, so it works. This example is from Earth One (probably the closest match), but it's a common look in the comics:

I love the retro atmosphere with the attire and vehicles, seems very appropriate for the tale. Originally, I'd think they'd be showing the 1920 or 1940 remake, as has been retconned in the comics. Though I guess this one skips around those date limitations and simply has it as a reshowing of it. Though we can assume the date is 1981 based on that being the release date of Excalibur. I guess that mention is another influence to the Dark Knight lore.

Despite seeing LOTS of variations of this particular scene, I think this one has a chance to be different. After the seeing the modernized Nolan version, I look forward to seeing a more traditional take on it. So far, they've stuck closely to the comics, and this leak is no exception.

Does anyone know who's playing Martha Wayne?

Anyway, I'm please to see Thomas Wayne finally being portrayed with a 'stache.  I always thought Tom Selleck might have been a great choice for the character.

My only issue with Jeffrey Dean Morgan is that I always look at him and think I'm watching Javier Bardem, and as brilliant an actor as Bardem is I simply couldn't imagine 'Anton Chigurh' as little Bruce's father.

Comingsoon.net seems to have beat me to the punch  :-[

They link to more interesting photos and videos. Interestingly, they show a picture of the posters that do indeed confirm that it is the 1981 film Excalibur, as well as the 1940 Tyrone Powers remake of The Mark of Zorro (no surprise, since that was the one featured in The Dark Knight Returns).

The video actually shows Thomas' shooting being filmed. Can't go into more detail, it's pretty blurry. Though Martha is wearing yellow, as in the comic.

I'm going to take a wild guess that in this interpretation of the Wayne murders, Bruce will witness a star flashing up in the sky (unaware that it's actually Kal-El's spaceship arriving on Earth) right after losing his parents. If this backstory is to take place in 1981 as the Excalibur movie posters in the set photos suggest, then remember this: that was around the same time Kal landed on Smallville in MOS.

I'm hoping that we get a nice flashback of him as Thomas Wayne, maybe not just for the unfortunate murder but maybe other flashbacks with his interaction with young Bruce.
