Title: Kevin Costner in the new Jack Ryan film !
Post by: Batman88 on Mon, 3 Sep 2012, 08:43
The new Kenneth Branagh-helmed Jack Ryan film started shooting a couple of days ago, September first. I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS JUST 'CAUSE KEVIN COSTNER IS IN IT.

I am so happy that Kevin is having a career "resurgence" as journalists have been calling it lately. I've been a fan since I was a little kid; own books about him, every single film he's starred in and posters of his films, seen as many interviews with him as possible during the years. HE'S THE MAN. One of my top 5 favorite MEN ever.

Also, beyond the Ryan role, Kevin could have also found his Liam-Neeson-becomes-a-badass-thanks-to-Taken style part in the Adi Hasak- and Besson-scripted Three Days to Kill. I hope he'll sign on to do the role. Can totally picture him playing it.

I CAN'T LITERALLY WAIT TO SEE HIM BACK ON THE BIG SCREEN KICKING A**-

I'm sure excited about him having a few high-profile projects coming out but what I think I'm even more excited about is that he's being re-discovered by those critics that have been putting him down the past 15 years or so. What we are witnessing is a rightful recognition of the guy's talent but I imagine it's easier calling it a comeback.

Yeah, that's a classic. Love it. One of my favorites, ever.

I didn't know Chris Pine had been cast as Jack Ryan. I love the old film series, especially The Hunt for the Red October. So I'll look forward to seeing how this turns out.

The Untouchables is a classic too. A great TV show (the original version) and a great movie. If you think about it, Connery had an amazing run of films in the late eighties/early nineties: The Untouchables, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for the Red October. So good, in fact, that I think I feel a song coming on...

Incidentally, Michael Keaton and Kevin Costner appeared on screen together during the morgue party scene in Night Shift (1982).

I'm not. He's basically had only 1 successful film since Dances with wolves (thirteen days), other than that it's been a brutal series of flops for him. Waterworld actually wasn't a bad movie but his acting was brutal in it. But he was on fire in the late 80's and early 90's. I'm actually interested to see how he fares as Jonathan Kent, he hasn't done a lot of supporting work but perhaps with a smaller role he can focus on his scenes more and recapture his magic with films such as Field of Dreams. I don't see him as a leading man again though although some actors re invent themselves at later ages, for instance Alec Baldwin.

Box-office success doesn't imply a movie is good. And he has done supporting roles like in The Upside of Anger and The Company Men in which he was terrific. Also, Hatfields & McCoys was a tremendous success on all levels and he's been nominated for an Emmy for Best Actor in a Mini-Series. Also, he was terrific in Mr. Brooks, Open Range . . . anyway, thanks for expressing your opinion, much appreciated.

He seems like a likeable person--I actually was intrigued when he went to Congress with an idea for helping clean up the BP Oil Spill.   It seemed as though he genuinely wanted to help, and had an idea that might have been useful.  I know some media pundits portrayed him as being off his rocker for doing that, but hey, anyone who wants to help out in a time of crisis gets a thumbs up from me.

I thought he was brilliant in Silverado, I like Untouchables well enough (loved it as a kid, but David M's writing is all over the place), and Field of Dreams was my anthem--I was a baseball nut until a few years ago.  And yay to Bull Durham as well.

His record post 1990 is a bit spotty:  Water World, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Wyatt Earp, and some other misfires punctuate his recent career.

I am very much looking forward to his work as Jonathan Kent.  Interesting that they're going with him for Jack Ryan. I suppose Ben Affleck ultimately was a bit too young for the character--and despite his aging there is still an aura of youth or a lack of aesthetic maturity about him.  Not a bad thing, mind you, but just not right for the role.  I liked Baldwin's version of the character the best so far, but I thought Patriot Games was the strongest entry in the series so far.  I'm excited for KC to have a chance at getting his career back on track.

Thanks for your nice write-up ! I'd like to stress that he's not playing Jack Ryan in the new film, but his mentor. Ryan is being played by Chris Pine who's a young actor.

^ Ah!  Well that makes sense.  I like Chris Pine.  Should be interesting.  But I tend to picture Jack Ryan as a bit older, so we'll see.

Still, best of luck to KC.

Yeah, he seems to me like the kind of character you picture in your head as being a little older than that. This film should be kind of a prequel, from what I gather, though.

Anyone here see Mr. Brooks ? It's a terrific, little quirky film.

I think Costner was born to play Pa Kent, don't you guys feel the same ?

JFK wasn't a flop. Robin Hood was a huge hit. A Perfect World made huge money. Open Range made money. Mr. Brooks made money. Less noted works like Upside to Anger made money and garnered him some accolades.

These films all came after Dances with Wolves. Oh, and there was Thirteen Days. I grant you it didn't exactly ooze money, but it is considered a pretty darned good feature (i agree), among many others. Seems like he's had as many up as he's had downs, and his resume seems fairy typical for the average A or B lister.

So...What was your argument again?

I don't want to be a D-Head or anything, but I detect a little bit of "Seth Macfarlane routinely makes fun of ENTER CELEB HERE' so I'll just form an opinion based on that" in a lot of the criticism Costner gets -- based on a career that to be fare seems not much different than any other major celebrity actor.

I'm not saying YOU personally fall into the the 'world according to Family Guy' camp, but even so.

Okay JFK was great but wasn't that the next year after DWW? Robin hood may have been successful but so was batman and Robin, both of them had brutal acting. So we still have 20 years with only 1 or 2 strong performances and quite a few flops. The postman and 3000 miles to graceland come to mind. I don't usually watch family guy anymore but I did see the scene where they make fun of him (funny but yes Costner is still a better actor than Kilmer).

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves came right after Dances and happens to be one of the most fondly remembered adventure films from the 90s. It did monster business and, while you can say Costner's acting wasn't Oscar worthy, it definitely suits the character as portrayed in THAT particular film. Plus, all of the other cast members were great (Alan Rickman, anyone ?).

So, I wouldn't place this film alongside B&R since the former is fondly remembered and the latter isn't.

JFK came after Robin Hood and it was another monster hit which also earned him a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actor in a Dramatic Role.

Then came The Bodyguard: a popcorn movie which was a tremendous box-office success.

Then after that a performance that might be the finest in his career: he played Butch Haynes in A Perfect World directed by Eastwood. This film got terrific reviews and while it wasn't a monster hit, it made big money, especially in Europe where it's regarded as a milestone.

Wyatt Earp while a solid film (albeit a bit too long) did flop. Doesn't mean the movie's bad.

WaterWorld did not flop ! Ok, you may not think Costner's acting in it is any good, but the film made its money back. All one has to do is look at the grosses; but, again, when a lie is more interesting than truth, people will print the lie.

Tin Cup is a fun, entertaining and well-acted comedy that did really good business and earned him another Golden Glove Nomination for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy.

The Postman did flop. Period.

Message in a Bottle did solid business. As did the film that followed, For Love of the Game which was directed by Sam Raimi.

Thirteen Days is a terrific thriller and one heck of a film. Terrifically acted. Did do decent business and is regarded as a really solid, good film.

3000 Miles to Graceland was not a box-office hit, but it's an interesting experiment just because Kevin gets to play a really bad guy with no redeeming qualities at all. So, while it's not a classic, there's something interesting to be discovered here.

DragonFly could have been so much betteer but even as it stands it's an entertaining and moving thriller. Did do decent money.

Kevin won the Emmy Award for Best Lead Actor in a dramatic role for his role as Devil Hanse in Hatfields & McCoys and Tom Berenger won as Best Supporting Actor as well !

I AM SO HAPPY ABOUT HIS WIN: SOOOO OVERDUE ! He's a class act.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQmOZBvveeU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3ya3GBkkSo

I saw "Entertainment Tonight," and Kevin told Nancy O'Dell that yes, he kind of wanted to win -- and she was like, she loves that honesty, someone admitting he wants to win. He also said his 5-year-old will probably take the Emmy to "share day" at school. What a share!

This meant a lot to him -- for so many reasons. Validation is the main one, in my opinion.

He looked pensive, serious, tense, and I think it's because he was nervous and was really wanting this.

He was nominated for an Oscar for Dances and nominated for Golden Globes for Dances, JFK and Tin Cup but of course didn't win. The San Francisco Film Critics Circle did name him Best Supporting Actor of 2005 for The Upside of Anger but that's not quite the same as an Oscar, Emmy or Golden Globe.

I still don't know how he got passed over for at least a nomination for A Perfect World.
