Figure I'll update this thread with new postings at my blog whenever I can. :)
Today I posted a new interview I conducted with Makeup Effects Artist Nick Dudman (who gave Joker his smile in '89). You can check it out here:

I am calling this new recurring segment "8-to-9 Questions With..." as a play on the whole '89 thing. ;)

I'm loving the pics James. I know you're doing the smart thing and feeding us these great Batman goodies in drips but just out of interest, do you have any 'Batman Returns' related pics and memorabilia in the offing? I have a few Batman Returns stuff back from 1992 myself but you judging from your 'Batman '89' collection you might have some rare stuff I haven't seen yet.

Yeah, I am trying to keep the posts coming on a semi-regular basis for long-term enjoyment.... My focus has been mostly on '89 stuff so far, but I have trickled a few Returns things on here and there. :) I will eventually post up everything I have for Returns too, but I don't have the same volume as '89.
I will probably just keep the Returns updates in this same thread though to keep everything together (instead of posting a new thread in the Returns section of the forums).

New "Vintage Magazine Article" post up today! One of the best of the '89 Batman-related mags of the time: The November 1989 Double-Issue of Cinefantastique!

I have 2 copies of that mag :-)
It was the first magazine I transcribed onto the site all those 11 or so years ago
Thanks for posting, James!
I remember this magazine being one of those I didn't get the chance to pick up as a kid, but had always hoped I would happen upon it sometime, which never happened. Once I got on the net in '98, I found it on eBay and finally got it. Wish I would have been able to get it back in '89 though. I'm sure I would have read this beauty numerous times over!

This issue of Cinefantastique, the Cinefex mag, and the movie souvenir magazine were my reading articles of choice for pretty much the entire second half of '89. I took those things EVERYWHERE. :)
And while I'm here... a new update!
The stigma of the 60's show permeates today's "Vintage Newspaper Clipping" post at the blog, as the March 4, 1989 edition of the Salinas Claifornian examines the "Holy Trend Batman..."

Cool stuff.
Oh, and I enjoyed the review of 'Knock Out Joker' on your youtube channel. Been waiting on that one, and was actually going to suggest it, but was pleasantly surprised when I was checking my youtube subscriptions the other day, and saw the review was up!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFXgBS95MSg
Any chance of the 1st Joker figure from the 1989 Batman toy line getting a review? That one, more so than others, was pretty much THE Joker figure during my childhood. And this is coming from a guy who did have the Super Powers Joker figure prior. It holds alot of nostalgic value to me, and that's the reason I ask.
(https://www.batman-online.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.ebayimg.com%2Ft%2FBatman-Movie-The-Joker-Action-Figure-1989-w-Squirting-Orchid-MOC-Toy-Biz-%2F00%2Fs%2FMTAyNFg3Njg%3D%2F%24T2eC16J%2C%21ysE9sy0h%2528jtBQYQZ1GbCQ%7E%7E60_35.JPG&hash=297fcc2463e4b0ae2389ed518dadd39b9788c327)
Thanks man! :)
I am in the same boat as you... For years, the Toy Biz Joker was my '89 Joker (though I too had the Super Powers version), so even though it doesn't quite stand up to the Kenner versions quality-wise, it still holds a special place for me. He will definitely be reviewed in the coming weeks as we just decided this past weekend to start doing the Toy Biz stuff (we did Bob the Goon first). It will probably be all Kenner next week, but TB Joker will be coming up soon after that. :)
-James
Cool! Thanks! Looking forward to it, as well as the Toy Biz figures (just watched the one for Bob).

New "Vintage Magazine Article" posting at the site! Today's post features an interview with Bob Kane from the July '92 issue of Comics Scene Spectacular! Bob explains his various contributions to the Burton films in this article... though he also claims to have had an affair with Marilyn Monroe and doesn't seem to understand why Frank Miller didn't draw Batman like him in Dark Knight Returns, so who really knows what was going on here. :)
(https://www.batman-online.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg220%2Fsallah4life%2Fbatman%2Fcss1_zps6d69aea5.jpg&hash=b6cbb220b45e881f22ff60343ee44f6b389f01d9) (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/sallah4life/media/batman/css1_zps6d69aea5.jpg.html)

...and yeah- Despite the cover, there is basically nothing on Pfeiffer's Catwoman in the issue.
-James
Thanks again for these articles James. :)
Didn't Bob Kane say he dated Marilyn Monroe whilst she was still 'Norma Jean' and that he partly based Vicki Vale on her look? I don't think Kane is suggesting he had an affair with Monroe after she became famous but with Kane you never know what's true...

You are very welcome! :)
as for Kane/Monroe... he states in the article that it was right around the time she transitioned into Marilyn... but who knows. He also states seeing her in '43 and '49 in Hollywood. In 1943, Marilyn Monroe still went by Norma Jeane... but she was also 17, was not a model or anybody known, she was married, and she was not living in Hollywood. If it was '49 that he referred to as the time of their relationship, she would have already become Marilyn Monroe.
Heck, we also don't even know how much of a hand Kane had in the penciling or writing for Vicki Vale's debut in Batman issue #49, so who knows who really designed her or what she was based off of.
I guess it all depends on when, where, and who he was telling the story to. ;)
-James
(As much as I loath incredibly lame and very obvious puns, Kane deserved the cane. One guy was deprived of his credit as a Batman co-creator/contributor, the other had the luxury of telling tall tales about Marilyn Monroe.. It's always two things, double standards and the failure to give credit to those that deserve it, that can really set some people off...)

Fantastic update! I've never seen some of that footage before. It's strange hearing Keaton deliver the "You see that thing on my belt?" line in his normal pre-dubbed voice. And is it just me, or does the sketch of Batman at the 6:10 mark look like Marshall Rogers' handiwork? Could that be an example of the elusive concept art he's alleged to have produced for the film?
I'm looking forward to seeing more of this press kit. :)
James, you're the best. Seriously. This is content that, now having seen, I cannot be without. My hat off to you, sir.

Yup! :) Those are by David Russell, who did Concept/ Storyboard work on the film... There are some great full color ones out there from him too.

Thanks - I didn't recall seeing the two I posted. Very noir.
The rest of the Video Press Kit is now up!

To me, the B-Roll footage is amazing to see... especially the bit starting at the 3:50 mark. It gave me chills. :)

Quite honestly, this all (ESPECIALLY the B-Roll footage) is the perfect present for the 25th. Better than Warner's will do with their 25th anniversary edition, I'm completely sure.
A thousand thank yous!
That B-roll footage is fantastic. You could make an excellent teaser trailer out of the clips beginning at the 3:50 mark. You'd have to edit it a little and speed it up. Maybe add audio samples of certain quotes from the movie. It could end with the shot of Keaton throwing back his cape as he stands beside the Batmobile, accompanied by the quote: "I tried to avoid all this, but I can't [...] he's out there right now, and I've gotta go to work." Then cut to the logo, followed by a black screen with the release date superimposed over it.
Truly magical. Thanks a million.
I agree with Doc. This is probably as good as it gets for the 25th. Long with Batman89.
Wow, that scene with the Batmobile and Elfman's 'Childhood Remembered' is brilliant! To echo the thoughts of users above me, that would've made for a terrific teaser trailer.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Forgive me for waxing nerdily, but... well, here I go.
That B-roll bit of glamour footage of the Batmobile to "Childhood Remembered" (which now may be my favorite piece of the score) did give me chills, for unexpected reasons. The music, combined with the dark room and nothing else made the Batmobile appear far more intimidating and imposing than I'd ever noticed about it before. Having grown up with the film, I think I had taken the car's design for granted, having become used to it for so long and not being 'evolved' enough the first time seeing it to take away the impact Furst and Burton designed it for.
But beyond that, the haunting quality of the music fit with this lost bit of footage. It helps the whole B-roll section feel like it's some kind of top secret time capsule for us fans, something none of us were meant to see--which I guess, of course, we weren't.
Seeing that ultra-rare footage of Keaton standing aside the vehicle and do that cape swish did something rare for me; it made me see him as I did when I was a small child. Normally when I look at him in-character now, I usually see the actor/his career/the man that is Michael Keaton. Seeing his other films had perhaps taken away the magic of how I discovered this man. But the music, the atmosphere, the vibe... in that moment he was once again simply "Batman" to me. Seeing that B-roll footage did something special: for about a minute, I was an awestruck child again.
And it was wonderful.
And, as a funny aside, the very last image of Keaton in that zooming shot looking at the camera in his Batsuit was actually pretty terrifying. He looked like a coiled psychopath. All of Nolan/Bale's 'hard work'... and Keaton is more effective with so much less.
Doc has said exactly what I was feeling but couldn't express.
Childhood Remembered really is a haunting, 'old' sounding piece of music. In the film it's Bruce recounting his past. And here, we are doing the same. Remembering ourselves as youngsters, sitting up and watching this classic over the years.
Happiness and sadness wrapped in a big bow.

Ya nailed it Doc... This is EXACTLY what I felt when I saw it- Especially that last bit with him looking into camera. All of a sudden, I was a boy just about to turn 11 again, staring awestruck at the movie magazine resting on the grocery store periodical rack.
Truly magic.

25 years later, B89 is still taking us to school.
Another rare treat to celebrate Batman's 25th Anniversary! Much like the recently posted Video Press Kit, the 1988 Warner Brothers Batman Preview is a long-buried treasure created during the production of Batman... It is up today at the site for your viewing pleasure, and also includes a brand new interview with the special's director- Andrew Gillman! Go check it out!

THIS is the kind of stuff that needs to be on the 25th anniversary edition release, as opposed to a repackaging.
Seriously, the SE DVD release was indeed so good, my only thoughts are: digging up more archival material (like this and the press kit stuff), remastering the SE features for HD, and inclusion of news reports (all that stuff is archived, I'm sure. WB could do some digging). Or maybe all of it rolled into one new documentary about the film's quarter-century impact.
