Title: Cool look at Batman over the years

Still gotta love Keaton's Bat and the older grey suit from the old serial.

You know the suit from Burtons original Batman is still my favourite. Returns is more refined, but I like the animal/human look of the first film.

Returns is a close second.

Not fond of Nolans Batsuits, never was. Too japanese or robotic looking.

The Keaton batsuits always were #1 for me, with a slightly more liking for the Returns suit, b/c of the cowl & bat symbol.

The Panther suit comes second, despite the nipples (which I find to be more subtle than the Clooney batsuit), & the grey one from the 1943 serial is pretty accurate to the Bob Kane Batman designs of the 1930's/40's.

The rest are meh, looking either looking too silly (the West suit, Clooney suits) or too robotic (the Bale suits).

I will always love and prefer the Keaton's batsuit, especially the one from "89. I don't know, I was thinking that when WB has the ability to do something new with the franchise I wouldn't mind seeing the grey suit on screen in a sort of retro-type Batman movie, but not campy, very bad-ass.  ;D

Yeah, they should base the film on the 1930's pre-Robin Detective Comics with giant monsters, vampires & what not, with Burton at the helm of course.

I really like the first Nolan suit (despite the thick neck that, combined with the "horns", makes him look like a bull), but I hated the TDK one from the first moment. In the film it looks OK, but when you see it in stills, it's silly. Like a special forces rugby player with two horns on his helmet and a cape.

I agree the suits worn by Keaton look the best - and the ice cream suit worn by Clooney the most ridiculous.

Plus the design of the chest in the TDK suit makes it look like he's wearing a bra!(https://www.batman-online.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.batmanmovieonline.com%2Fgallery%2F1236712812.jpg&hash=1b4ffab02e44e639f079ca602af1cc7a750248da)

Nice still. It does look a little too X-games but I guess I still like it. Remember things change over the years, just like the suit in Batman Reuturns was a little different from the one in '89.

There is an animalistic, brute quality to the suit that should remain though, no matter who brings Batman to the screen.

Once again, it all comes down to Burton's interest in creating an aesthetically superior Batman in contrast to Nolan's interest in presenting a more credible Batman.  Whilst Burton's Batman costumes are much better looking, Nolan's costumes are designed for functionality within a 'real-world' setting.

For what it's worth, the 'organic'-looking pitch black Batman costume of the first Burton Batman film is by far my favourite.

they may not be the best movies but the costumes in batman forever and batman and robin are the smartest. the belt matches the rest of the suit. why if you're trying to hide in the shadows would you have a BRIGHT YELLOW BELT!? not to mention the chest thing! and yet in those two movies where the belt and chest thing blend in, batman is like a public figure. dumbasses. lol.

and my favorite is the one in batman returns. maybe because i would like to rub my claws all along it myself.  ;)

What the bright silver ones with the nipples are the 'smartest'?!?  Not to mention Robin's bright red and green costume.

Reminds me of one fan who reacted to the TDK suit by paraphrasing Christian Bale's MTV Movie Awards acceptance speech: "I want to thank [Chris Nolan] for getting rid of those bloody nipples...and giving him a bra instead."

The Panther and Sonar suits from Forever are my favorites.

Exactly. Burton's suits are superior in terms of pure aesthetics. And that is all it comes down to. In all seriousness, for a film, Batman just has to look good and intimidating.

We don't need to be told that Batman can or can't turn his head. We don't need backstories into the mechanics of the suit. It just has to be an 'image', if you know what I mean. The viewer can make it be what they want and it's not explicity commented on.

Speaking of looks.  Why doesn't Batman completely cover his face with black war paint?   He already applies  black makeup for his eyes.  You would think, a look like that would help even more with his Bat Image.  Consider the following:

A. Blends his mask more with his face

B. Makes it harder for people to recognize him.

C. Causes more fear in the hearts of criminals

D. Makes him appear more supernatural.

E. Helps him to remain hidden in the shadows.

but you forgot f.

f. makes him look like he gave an exhaust pipe a blowjob if he tries to reveal himself to the love of his life to keep her from making what he thinks is a big, big mistake.

:P

They are valid points, but I think it comes down to the name of the character. Batman. The visible facial flesh immediately has human connotations. Say, in the cathedral fight we have Batman with blood on his exposed face. I connect to that image. I for one wouldn't have it any other way. It just looks right.

Exactly, Dark Knight, it indeed looks just right.  ;)

wouldn't walking on two legs and having two arms and a human like body make him a batMAN anyway?

I wasn't dissing the original look.  I was just considering Bruce's concept of becoming a Bat. The purpose for the look of Batman is to inflict fear and terror in the hearts of criminals.  Bruce does this by becoming a creature of the night, a Bat.  I don't necessarily believe that applying black war paint on his face would take away his Human aspects.  It would only enhance his desire to personify the image of a Bat.

As someone mentioned about Nolans 'real world' aspect on his Batman films. I think that aspect on the Batman universe is ridiculas in ways. Batman is a fantasy to me, a man dressing up as a bat to fight crime. It came from comic books.

So the whole idea about making a functioning bat-suit is ridiculas. Its a film, and illusion, fake. It doesnt have to work in the real world. It just has to look good and intimadate like a previous poster said.

Like Frank Miller once said "I don't want to see Supermans sweat patches, I want to see him fly!"

Someone should tell Nolan that.

Great post, Joker81. I feel the same way. For all the effort they went to, all they gave was one piece of dialogue about it anway. And after that, we're still stuck with this aesthetically inferior Robo Bat for the rest of the film.

i agree!

i like the batman movies that don't take themselves quite so seriously and that are a little more fantasy like. not too fantasy like batman fighting space aliens or vampires unless he's stomping those sparkly fags (lol) but you get what i mean.

don't you? :-\

Good point. There is a difference. B89 and BR are dark in nature, but they do not take themselves seriously. They're not self important like BB and TDK. B89 and BR have a breezy, classic feel that are purpose built for repeat viewing.

B'89 suit is definitely at the top. Here, I'm going to rank them.

B'89
BR
BB
"Panther" suit
TDK
Clooney

I was so disappointed with the TDK suit. It looked flatout aweful.
