Title: The Batsuit
Post by: Max Eckhardt on Mon, 8 Apr 2019, 09:32
How would you like Batman to appear on film?
I love seeing the neal Adams blue and grey toned Batman suit in the old comics but I'm not sure that would translate very well to film.

Personally I'm a fan of the longer ears. And I love a long cape. I know Burton used differing lengths of capes in various scenes when making his 1989 movie. So it was short and practical for fights and long and operatic for gliding. Perhaps this could be woven into the story and we could see the cape adjust  lengths on screen. (No verbal explanations though, I've have enough of that with the Nolan movies.) just convey the idea visually.

I also prefer Batman to wear black. But I'm not married to the idea of rubber. A black armour weave would be my preference. I do not believe grey is any more realistic for nighttime urban stealth excursions and I wouldn't care even if it was :)

I would also like the yellow chest oval to return. I think we are long overdue. The last time we saw it on film was in 1995. I know the realism of it, the practical merits can be argued for and against both ways but again, I'm more interested in the seeing something visually striking in the movie. Maybe it could be lit manually by Batman?

So he could be hidden in shadows and when he decides to make a dramatic entrance the thing literally glows in the dark seconds before he bursts from the shadows.

As for eye lenses I'm not sure about this one. They worked for me in Ben Affleck's Daredevil cowl. They could have an auto focus mechanic like saw in Spiderman's homecoming suit.

What would you like to see?

I definitely want to see the yellow chest oval again. As for the color of the suit, I prefer black but I wouldn't mind seeing the blue and grey either.

No armour. No fake padding. No rubber muscles. No all-black colour scheme.

The only part that should be sculpted is the cowl. The rest should be made of a thin lightweight fabric that allows Batman to move with agility and stealth. Stick as close as possible to the old-school comic book costume, and that includes the trunks. Basically a combination of these two suits.

A cloth uniform would shape how this movie approach Batman. He wouldn't be able to do something like the BVS warehouse fight, obviously.

Instead, he would have to use more stealthy methods and surgical strikes to minimize his risk. I like that approach since it's a very Marv Wolfman sort of thing. Plus, it would be something new in big screen cinema. Audiences have seen Batman fight zillions of opponents but it's rare for them to watch him pick his enemies off one by one. Even Nolan's films didn't show that much.

And can we bring the yellow oval back? It's been absent from film since 1995, y'all.

I like the suggestions here. Lately I've been thinking a reference to Batman's first appearance would be cool. Perhaps something similar, with the yellow belt and blue shade to the inner cape. But with the yellow oval on the chest, and no purple gloves. Generally speaking, I'm still really excited about the Patman era.

Vanessa Kirby has been linked to Selina Kyle, and that casting would get a big tick from me. As for Catwoman's costume, I think it's also time for something else. Nolan had his Catwoman in something more akin to the Hush outfit, and we all know what Michelle wore. How about a grey outfit like BTAS, or even purple?

I just saw this on the Batman-Online Facebook page. THIS is the kind of batsuit I want to see in the next movie.

That belt is way too big for that particular cosplay, but everything else looks great. I love that Bat emblem.

Not bad. Reminds me of the BTAS suit. Word around the campfire is that The Long Halloween will be the inspiration behind the film, so we'll see if that translates to the aesthetics and not just the storyline. I have a feeling we could be getting the white eyes full time, especially given the detective slant. I'm open to that, provided it looks good.

Blue and Gray
Seems like this is the palette we're getting. It remains to be seen if it's blue and gray ala Neal Adams, or in the spirit of Hush. I think a Hush style suit is probably more likely. But either way, I'm on board with a blue hue. Apart from the Adam West show the live action films haven't gone that route, so it would be a breath of fresh air after all this time.

A good Christmas present or New Years present would be a promo shot of Rob in the new suit, given filming is very close - apparently they're building a cathedral in a shed for the movie right now.

Yeah, I heard about the cathedral. Very cool. Apparently, they're already rehearsing the movie with the cast. We're getting extremely close to shooting.

I can't wait to see the Batsuit and Batmobile. Can't-friggin-wait.

Me either. I'm hoping Reeves builds his own Gotham much like Burton and Schumacher. Having a cathedral set is a step in the right direction at least. When I hear the word cathedral I can't help but get excited, as it's probably the most iconic location for Batman fans - especially Burton Batman fans. I have a good feeling about this - go get em' Rob.

That helps restore some of my (waning) enthusiasm for this movie. It's hard to know for sure what to think because the red monochromatic lighting prevents too much study.

It looks like the chest symbol is detachable. Honestly, that's a long overdue innovation. From a certain point of view, the chest symbol doesn't serve a functional purpose. So providing a functional purpose is a sort of obvious move.

And yet, these characters are meant to be fantastically larger than life so why does form follow function? Why is that non-negotiable?

Either way, Pattinson looks the part as Batman, no doubts there. But then, I don't think there were very many doubts.

Not what we were expecting, especially given the talk of blue and gray color schemes. Obviously there's a heavy Arkham Knight influence. I think the Batfleck suits satisfied their Arkham Asylum/City/Origins cravings. They're sticking with that videogame template but are instead going with Knight's aesthetic. I can see their logic especially as a point of difference.

As colors said, I wouldn't be surprised if the emblem doubles as a remote control batarang, in the style of Holland's Spider-Man. Batman's suit can be a gadget in itself, as the BF sonar suit proves. In context of a detective thriller, I'm cool with that concept.

Unless I'm missing some other comic reference, the collar is unique to Pattinson, which isn't a bad thing. I also think it's their stylistic way of addressing neck mobility. The cowl itself, when brightened up, has the appearance of being handmade, which contrasts against the futuristic vibe of the armor.

I don't think it looks like a clone of TDK's suit. If anything, even with the Arkham Knight influence, it feels alien to the film franchise, and that's something I'm embracing. A full body shot without the red will give us a better feel. Curious to see how long the ears are, too.

People are saying the emblem is made from the gun that Joe Chill used. It's a call back to Kevin Smith's story he did with Jim Lee. It's not confirmed, but it does look like a gun cut in half to resemble a bat.

I hadn't considered that, but looking at the image, it's certainly a possibility. Reeves has said the story is told from Batman's perspective. This could be another way of centralizing the story on him, especially as this is Year Two in his crime fighting career.

And the music is Giacchino's. Seems fine so far. It has the necessary darkness and tension one would expect.

I like this more than the initial tease by Reeves.

In this full body context you feel this is a Year Two type Batman that is more self made but still with technological components ala Arkham Knight, but perhaps that influence not as as dominant as first thought. It has bits and pieces from everywhere.

The chest plate evokes Beware The Batman. The logo itself is from his first appearance with just the wings and no ears. I'm also getting Zero Year and Gotham By Gaslight vibes, especially with the raised collar (a comic reference that slipped my mind previously) and Scotland setting. It seems like the eyes drop down while he's riding.

Good to have a more traditional looking Bat vehicle again after so long, too.

We should be seeing the new Batmobile soon.

Bale was gifted professional suits by Lucius and Batfleck was TDK Returns in age. This rawer look could feel like a shock to the system now, but give it time. Captain America's suits had a similar aesthetic when filming, but it translated better on film. I take it these are dry runs for night shooting, and I'm guessing the cape will be CG'ed on the back or there'll be some other arrangement.

I prefer this image in terms of getting a better vibe for the approach:

Really impressed by this effort to meld the West cowl with the Keaton cowl. This production can take a couple of cues from this design.

Can't really get past the bulging forehead on the mask. The suit itself looks more like armor without much bat motif to it. For me, I think the BvS suit just set the bar really high by showing you can adapt the comics look in a realistic setting (IMO 1989 already proved that as well).

Yeah, he looks good there.

I really love this suit. It's really grown on me since the first reveal years ago. One thing I didn't like at first was the nose. It's kinda squared off, instead of pointy like every suit we've seen before, but for some reason, I like it a lot. It looks good on Pattinson, and it sets it apart from the others. I also love the homemade look to it. The stitching is such a nice touch, and seems to have the similar lines to Adam West's cowl.

What appeals to me is how seamlessly smooth the cowl is to Pattinson's face, like a second skin.
