topic is painfully simple. just say why you're here and why you love the bat and the batman universe and what you love most about it. if there's another one of these and i've missed it then delete this, fearless leader (that's you, lex. i mean ral.)

Honestly, it was the hype and excitement surrounding the 1989 movie that first got me interested in the character.  Kids at school were telling me all about this exciting film which I was too young to see.  The iconic posters with the striking symbol also caught my eye:

It helped that 1989 was the 50th anniversary of Batman and so apart from the film there was a lot of attention on the character.

I finally got to see the film a couple of years later and was blown away by it.  I loved the darkness and pulpy nature of the world presented.  Batman is such a larger than life character, with his billions, and his fascinating gadgets, and intimidating yet eye-catching costume.  Consequently, I was hyped up to find out more about the sequel.

Once again, I love how fantastical these characters are.  I love that they are drawn in fairly broad strokes allowing for a wide range of interpretations (beyond the bare basics, such as Bruce Wayne being the child of an immensely wealthy family who were murdered before his eyes as a young child).  It's an exciting world full of exotic characters, yet the fact that Batman doesn't have super-powers also grounds it within a degree of credibility, unlike almost all other comic-book 'superheroes'.  Gotham is clearly a fictional world, but one that is nevertheless an extension of the one we live in.
Johnny Gobs got ripped and took a walk off a roof, alright? No big loss.

My first exposure to Batman was getting a set of Batman action figures with cape and Batmobile as well as a Robin action figure for Christmas. I first watched Batman on TV on the Justice League TV series, and later I saw Nolan's films. But the Burton films turned me into a real Bat-fan. I loved everything about them and they made me love the Batman universe. I love our hero and his villains because they're all interesting characters with great stories and motivation.

I love Batman, but most of all I love Burton's Batman.

Great thread!

The reason why I'm a Batman fan is because I find him the most intriguing character in comics. A man who uses his personal agony as a motivation to physically and mentally become something better. Committed to do everything he can to fight off crime.

As dated and even cheesy as that is, it tells everything that you need to know why Bruce became Batman.
QuoteJonathan Nolan: He [Batman] has this one rule, as the Joker says in The Dark Knight. But he does wind up breaking it. Does he break it in the third film?

Christopher Nolan: He breaks it in...

Jonathan Nolan: ...the first two.

Batman is something that's so embedded in pop culture, it's hard for me to trace exactly where I started. Though I'd go ahead and say that it was Batman: The Animated Series. I've had the toys since before I can remember, and I remember bits and pieces of seeing it as a child. Sometimes, I'll have some déjà vu when seeing a certain part of an episode to when I first saw it as a youngin.

Because like me, he'd prefer to be sitting in a pitch black cave brooding alone.

Because he's the second smartest person I know next to me.

If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?  :D
