General Bat-chat / A Fun Idea
Thu, 21 Apr 2016, 03:29
Does anyone remember that science-fiction comedy show "Mystery Science Theater 3000" from the 1990's? About a human and two robots who are being held as prisoners on a space ship and forced to watch bad science fiction and fantasy movies? And they'd constantly comment on them and make sarcastic and humorous remarks?

I liked that show when I was growing up and think it'd be nice if the show came back and we got to watch the various Batman movies with them. Not that they are "bad" movies though. But I think it would be fun.

What do you all think?

Batman Returns (1992) / German Expressionism
Tue, 29 Mar 2016, 04:47
One neat possible example of German Expressionism in this movie is the brief glimpse we get of a statue with its hands over it's face as though it is crying right after the Ice Princess falls to her death and the bats are flying around. It was very sad when she died. Nice touch Mr. Burton.

I think this would be a nice thread to document all of the neat things like this we've observed in the movie. Kind of like they are Easter Eggs.

Batman Returns (1992) / First Impressions
Mon, 18 Jan 2016, 23:40
What were people's first impressions of this movie? When I first saw it I thought it was great. Easily the best of the Batman movies in my opinion. I had already seen Batman '89 and Batman Forever and liked them but Batman Returns was better than both. Over the years I've only come to love it more now that I'm older, wiser and understand more of what's in the movie.

Batman Forever (1995) / Is it weird...
Tue, 4 Aug 2015, 01:48
Is it weird that I like this movie and even Batman & Robin better than Nolan's Batman? Is anyone else willing to admit they feel the same way? Or am I just going to be here all alone with egg on my face?  :-[

Nicole Kidman was at her most beautiful in this movie. Dr. Chase Meridian can analyze my dreams any time she wants to.

I love the scene where Chase is working out in her office. Not only does she look good but she shows she is strong and tough. And when Bruce breaks her office door down trying to be a hero she refuses to look impressed and contemptuously points out that since he's Bruce Wayne he can afford to buy her a new door.

I just love women like Chase. Strong, tough, smart, courageous, and of course beautiful.

Happy Birthday Batman Forever.

Batman Returns (1992) / Jan Hooks was great

Although she was only in one scene in this movie I thought Jan Hooks was very funny and memorable in it. I adore her work on Saturday Night Live. She has always been one of my favorite cast members on that show ever and I don't believe she ever received the recognition that she deserved. And she was quite memorable in her brief role in Pee-wee's Big Adventure. I was so sad when I heard she died last year. And this was around the same time Robin Williams and Joan Rivers went to the Promised Land too. There were truly some huge losses for comedy last year. Let's hope they are all making God laugh now.

Poison Ivy is the best thing about this movie. Uma was just the most beautiful and sexiest actress at the time who could've played her. The way she walks, the way she talks, everything she does is as sexy as is humanly possible. I watched this movie over and over again when I was a teenager just because of Uma's role in it. I like the new gallery upload picture of Uma as Poison Ivy. I don't care what some people might say. I think Uma is a beautiful woman.

Did anyone else like this movie or watch it over and over again just because of Uma's role in it?

I used to assume that Joker gassed all of those people to death at the museum. If so, that is just so dark and sick. But some people claim he used knock out gas because he didn't want to end up killing Vicki in case she didn't get the mask on in time. If that's the case it's a little disappointing because I had always thought they died. If it wasn't that dark then I'm kind of disillusioned. I mean, it's make believe so what does it matter?

What do people think? Did those people die? Or did they wake up later?

I love both Batman '89 and Batman Returns. But my favorite by far is Batman Returns. I think it's because I feel that all of the gothic weirdness, darkness and dark camp fits Batman's world perfectly. Batman '89 has these elements too but to a lesser extreme so I am very fond of both movies though. I think Batman Returns has a darker and more haunting score, even better acting and some more touching moments. On the other hand though I think Batman '89 has the best villain. But I also think Batman Returns has the best Gotham City. It's darker, more gothic and has all of those statues and stone faces that remind me of things I'd expect to only see in my nightmares. Also, I think Batman Returns is just more beautiful and bright (in a dark way) to look at. It's Gotham City looks cleaner and more attractive to the eye in spite of how much darker and more nightmarish it is. I feel I could call Batman Returns a beautiful nightmare.

Which of the two movies do people prefer and why?

Batman Returns (1992) / Dark Gotham
Thu, 6 Mar 2014, 04:26
I love the dark, gothic look of Gotham in the Burton Batman movies. Even the Schumacher Batman movies have a little of it if you can see past all of the neon lights. There are a lot of statues here in there in those later movies in scenes like when Two-Face is flying in his helicopter away from the bank and in the scene where Two Face is pushing the baby carriage. And of course who can forget the statue by the freeway and the statue holding up the observatory.

The best statues though are the statues in Gotham plaza pulling the levers. And I love all of the stone faces that you can find here and there in Batman Returns if you pay close enough attention. And Gotham Cathedral is just beautiful in both Burton movies even if it doesn't look the same. Wayne Manor in Batman Returns is a big improvement over the one in Batman '89 although I like that one too. Very gothic and fairy-tale like in my opinion. It looks to me like a castle really.

And the scene after Tucker and Esther drink their drinks when we see the night time view of Gotham's skyscrapers and hear that beautifully haunting music that is just perfect for a Tim Burton movie in my opinion. I don't know how faithful all of this is to the Batman comics but I think it all fits the universe perfectly.

Anyone agree?

I'm a big fan of this movie but one problem with it is that it doesn't have enough focus on Bruce Wayne. I wouldn't want anything cut from the movie though so to give more of a focus on Bruce Wayne I'd like the movie to be longer. How do people think the movie could've examined Bruce's character, his background and his motives more? Consider how this could've been done in Batman '89 too.

One thing for this movie I can think of is showing us more about why Bruce's relationship with Vicki Vale failed. And why he seems to like being alone so much.

As for Batman '89, I am fascinated by his line about bats. "They're great survivors." I'd like to know more about why Bruce said this and how it relates to him. Perhaps Bruce feels guilty for surviving while his parents did not.

Hi,

What does everyone think about the Ice Princess and what happened to her? I like the character, find her funny and extremely beautiful and sexy. I think that she's a very fun character and it's really sad when she dies. At first a person would kind of expect Batman to be able to save her. It's really sad when she falls to her death and goes against expectations about superheroes saving the beautiful damsel in distress.  :(
