The Killing Joke gets an R rating

After some speculation, WB has indeed moved forward with an R- rating for their upcoming animated film, The Killing Joke. Alan Moore's seminal comic has been lauded for its unflinching and gritty, dynamic look at the relationship between Batman and the Joker. It tells what many believe and indeed consider the definitive origin tale of how the Joker became...well...the Joker.

       WB as per Entertainment Weekly:

“From the start of production, we encouraged producer Bruce Timm and our team at Warner Bros. Animation  to  remain faithful to the original story — regardless of the eventual MPAA rating,” said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation & Warner Digital Series, in a statement. “The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience — the comics-loving community — with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.”

It remains to be seen how close and unflinching the film will be in comparison to its comic counterpart. Batman: The Killing Joke will premiere at Comic-con in the summer.
